Hankasalmi is a municipality of Finland.

It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region. The municipality has a population of 5,515 (31 December 2009)[2] and covers an area of 687.76 square kilometres (265.55 sq mi) of which 115.84 km2 (44.73 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 9.64 inhabitants per square kilometre (25.0 /sq mi). The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
