From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hemoglobin Barts consists of four gamma chains. It is moderately insoluble, and therefore accumulates in the red blood cells. It is an extremely high affinity hemoglobin that results in no oxygen delivery to the tissues. Hemoglobin Barts is present in the disease Hydrops fetalis.

Hydrops fetalis is the usual outcome of alpha thalassemia, especially with three alpha chain deletions

This variant of hemoglobin is so called as it was discovered at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London.
