Henry Edwards Huntington Middle School (HMS, HEHMS) is academically the top middle school in Southern California according to the California Academic Performance Index (API).[1] It is one of four public schools in San Marino, California and a part of the San Marino Unified School District.[2] The current principal is Dr. Gary D. McGuigan, while the current assistant principal is Mr. Dave Murray. Approximately 775 students are enrolled.[3] The school is named after Henry Edwards Huntington, who was a famous railroad magnate and business leader.

Achievements

Henry E. Huntington Middle School is recognized as both a California Distinguished School and a United States Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School. Huntington Middle School has also been the #1 ranked middle school in Southern California for five years in a row, based on the California Academic Performance Index (API). Additionally, over 60% of the student body is involved in either band, wind ensemble, orchestra, dance, choir, drama, or jazz band.[1]

Orchestra

In 2001, Gary McGuigan restarted the orchestra program, forming a small group of 25 students taught and directed by Rob Folsom.[4] It has since grown into a beginning, advanced, and chamber orchestra of around 60 musicians. At the 2006 Music in the Parks competition in Anaheim, California, they earned First Place in the String Orchestra category, Best Overall Orchestra, and a Gold rating. Then at the 2007 Forum Music Fesitval in Fullerton, California, they earned another Gold rating and the Outstanding Musicians Award. The 2008 Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, California, awawrded the Advanced orchestra First Place, a Gold Rating, the Adjudicators Award, and the Festival of Gold Award. Lastly, in April 2009, the Advanced Orchestra performed at the National Band and Orchestra Festival in Carnegie Hall. This year, they are supposed to perform at Washington D.C. The Orchestra Club organizes the holiday, spring, and graduation concerts each year.[5]

Technology

Huntington Middle School owns over 250 networked Apple computers centrally administrated from an Apple server. The school also owns two computer labs with approximately 35 iMacs each, all controlled through the Apple Remote Desktop software. Finally, a mobile cart equipped with an AirPort Extreme Base Station and HP laserjet printer holds about 32 laptop computers.[6] The PowerSchool Parent Portal grants students online access to their current grades, [7] while the school website lets them view assignments and subscribe to homework RSS feeds.[8] HMS Podcasts are posted online with recent news and announcements.[9]
