Sapenter was the 18th head college football coach for the Prairie View A&M University Panthers located in Prairie View, Texas and he held that position for two seasons, from 1995 until 1996. His career coaching record at Prairie View was 0 wins, 22 losses, and 0 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him 22nd at Prairie View in total wins and 22nd at Prairie View in winning percentage (0.000).[2][3] Coach Sapenter was initially hired on an interim basis with the specific rule that if he can win, he would be kept.[4]
Coach Sapenter's 22 consecutive losses played a major part in the worst losing streak in NCAA history of 88 games between 1989 and 1998.[5] Sapenter was first suspended with pay[6] and then subsequently fired from a rules violation investigation invovling the use of ineligible players.[7]
Sapenter had better results as a player at Prairie View when he played center and linebacker for in the late 1950s -- Prairie View fielded championship teams during this time period.[8] He played well enough to earn a place in the school's Hall of Fame.[9]
