From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Historical regions of Spain can refer to:

  • Historical nationalities (Spanish: Nacionalidades históricas), a term used to refer to regions in Spain that are granted special status as autonomous communities (see nationalities and regions of Spain)
  • Historical (autonomous) communities (Spanish: Comunidades Históricas), referred to those Spanish regions that had voted for and approved a Statute of Autonomy before the unsuccessful military coup-d'état against the Spanish Republic that led to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939); namely, those autonomous communities of Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country. In Spain, the term "historical community is used indistinctly with "historical nationality", with the first being usually considered a euphemism used to avoid a nationalistic point of view.
