Hugh McIlvanney, born in Kilmarnock, Scotland in 1933, is an award-winning, sports writer. He currently holds a long-running column on the back page of The Sunday Times sports section. He is known for his witty writing style and intuitive look at modern-day sport, mainly football.
He left Kilmarnock Academy to work at The Kilmarnock Standard as a reporter moving on to The Daily Express, The Scotsman, The Observer, Daily Express and The Sunday Times.
In 1996 he was awarded the OBE, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award 2004 by The Scottish Press Awards, and is the only sports writer to be voted Journalist of the Year.
His brother is the novelist and crime fiction writer William McIlvanney. He has one son, Conn and a daughter Elizabeth.
He is sometimes referred to as the "Boxing bard of Scotland" due to his love of, and excellence in writing about boxing.
In December 2008 he was inducted into the US Boxing Hall of Fame.
