Early life

Carpenter attended Clifton Forge High School in Clifton Forge, Virginia.[1]

College career

Carpenter attended and played college football at Virginia Tech from 1900 through 1903. During this time, used the alia "Walter Brown" because his father had forbidden him to play football.[2][3] It was not until his father saw him play in a game in 1900 against Virginia Military Institute in Norfolk, Virginia did he approve.[3] Carpenter then played at the University of North Carolina in 1904, and came back to Virginia Tech in 1905.[1] He was named captain in 1905 and helped lead Virginia Tech to a 9-1 record, the best in school's history up to that time. During that season, Tech outscored its opponents 305-24, and Carpenter scored 82 points.[1]

Carpenter was never named to the All-America team because Walter Camp, who named the team at the time, said he would never name a player who he had not seen play.[2][3] He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1957.[1]
