Post Graduate Programme (MBA): PGDM & PGDCM

IIM Calcutta's Post Graduate Programme (PGP) is equivalent to the MBA, and is actually composed of two distinct academic programmes: the PGDM and PGDCM[13][14].

The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a full-time, two-year residential academic programme that is designed to help students become excellent general managers and high-level business administrators with a broad strategic vision. This programme usually starts in June and runs till April of the second year since the start of the programme. PGDM at IIM Calcutta is a general, fully-integrated management programme, and includes courses in diverse areas such as Accounting, Behavioural Sciences, Finance, Economics, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Operations, Public Policy, Strategy and General Management[15].

The Post Graduate Diploma in Computer aided Management (PGDCM), which was started in 1994, is similar in overall structure to PGDM, with the difference that it has a special emphasis on Information Technology and its business applications[1]. It is aimed at creating business professionals who would know how to apply Information and Communication Technology (ICTs) in business management.

The Post Graduate Programme, including both PGDM and PGDCM, is structured into two parts: a core curriculum composed entired of compulsory credit and non-credit courses in the first year, and a set of elective courses offered in the second year chosen according to the wishes of students. The first year core curriculum is designed to help students in developing a solid base of business fundamentals through courses in all areas of management, while the second year curriculum is strucutured in such a way that students can select courses of their choice from a large bouquet of courses from various diverse fields. In the second year, students also have the option of taking up Term papers under faculty supervision if they wish to dwelve deeply into specific topics of their interest.

The two years of the Post Graduate Programme are divided by a mandatory Summer Internship programme that typically lasts between eight to ten weeks in April-May of the year after commencement of the programme.

Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) of IIM Calcutta is a full-time Doctoral level programme in management[16]. Started in 1971, this programme is aimed at preparing students for careers in teaching or research in different disciplines of management, as well as for careers outside academics that demand a high degree of research and analytical abilities. Students who complete this programme are awarded the title Fellow of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. This programme is officially recognized as equivalent to a PhD by the Government of India and by the Association of Indian Universities.

The FPM allows students to specialize in the following areas[17]:-

  • Behavioural Sciences
  • Economics
  • Finance & Control
  • Management Information Systems (MIS)
  • Marketing
  • Human Resource Management
  • Operations Management
  • Operations Research and Systems Analysis (ORSA)
  • Public Policy and Management
  • Regional Development
  • Sociology
  • Strategic Management

The programme structure typically consists of two phases: coursework - which lasts for two years (6 terms) during which the FPM students take courses along students undergoing the Post Graduate Programme (PGP), and the dissertation[18]. Students who complete the coursework phase with the required academic records have to pass the Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE) before moving on to the dissertation phase.

Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEX)

The Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEX) is IIM Calcutta's Executive MBA programme[8]. Introduced in December 2006, it is a full-time, one-year intensive programme designed to develop experienced and ambitious executives for leadership positions in global organizations[19]. The programme emphasizes practical problem-solving and the development of cross-cultural skills, and is structured as an appropriate mix of classroom lectures, case studies, and individual & team projects & assignments aimed at improving communication, team-building and leadership skills[8][19]. Participants in the programme are required to undertake an international project and an associated study tour to one or two foreign countries for a period of around three weeks. The programme is delivered by IIM-C faculty as well as internationally renowned faculty from other institutions.

Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM)

The Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) is an Executive management programme administered by IIM Calcutta along with two other premier Indian educational institutes: IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras[20]. The programme was designed by the three institutes in consultation with industry bodies like Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) of the Government of India and India's Ministry of Human Resource Development. It is a one-year, rigorous programme with a heavy focus on the manufacturing sector. 32 candidates with substantial professional experience are selected for this programme every year, and these students spend the one year attending courses in all the three institutes, and visit industries and undergo internships. Candidates, who come from diverse industries like Engineering, Power, Metal and Mining, Automotive & Auto-ancillaries, Shipping & Logistics, Aerospace, FMCG, Oil & Gas, Information Technology, Management Consulting and Railways, are often sponsored by their respective companies[21][22]. A joint Post Graduate Diploma in Management for Executives in Manufacturing (PGDM-VLM) by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras is awarded to candidates after the successful completion of the programme.

In 2007, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the governments of India and Japan, according to which the Japanese government would extend its support to the transfer of Japanese expertise and visits to manufacturing centres of excellence in Japan for the PGPEX-VLM programme[20].
