Flamengo

Ibson arrived at Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in 1992, at the age of nine. His father, Laís Souza, eventually became a scout at the club. He was promoted to the club's first team in 2003 and made his debut in a match against Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama, historically on of Flamengo's biggest rivals. He had nine appearances in the Brazilian first division that season.

In the following year, Ibson became one of the team's most important players, under the guidance of Abel Braga and playing alongside players like Zinho, Felipe and Jean he won the 2004 Guanabara Cup and Rio de Janeiro State League, and also finished as runner-up in the Brazilian Cup; that season, he scored 11 goals in a total personal record of 66 matches.

After a good season, some European clubs showed interest in Ibson and, just three matches into the Carioca league, he was transferred to Portuguese giants F.C. Porto, in January 2005. Flamengo received many criticism about his transfer, most of it coming from the transfer values, around US$2,5 million dollars. At that time, club directors said they cashed the money as his contract would run out at the end of the year, so the club could have lost him for nothing.

Porto/Flamengo return

At Porto, Ibson had a good start, quickly becoming an habitual first-choice, and did. In his first complete season, he won the league, cup and supercup.

In 2006-07, however, he lost space in the team, also having some problems with then manager Jesualdo Ferreira. Subsequently, he would be loaned in July 2007, in a return move to first team Flamengo.

He arrived at the club with it placed in relegation zone (18th), signed alongside Maxi Biancucchi and Fábio Luciano, helping in an incredible comeback, as Flamengo finished third, the club's best campaign since the title-winning season in 1992, which also secured a place in the 2008 Libertadores. Ibson scored six times in 22 matches, having also been elected the league's best right midfielder. The loan was then extended for a further year.[1]
