"If I Were a Boy" is a pop song by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles. It was written by Toby Gad and BC Jean, and produced by Gad and Knowles for her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008). Alongside "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", the song was released as the album's lead single to U.S. radio on October 8, 2008. The single has topped many charts in European countries. "If I Were a Boy" is, to date, Knowles' best-selling single in the United Kingdom with sales of 588,196 units.

Background

Up-and-coming singer BC Jean, who wrote most of the song's lyrics, took inspiration in writing "If I Were a Boy" from a bad break-up. Jean and producer Toby Gad were strolling in Times Square when the former saw hot dogs that enticed her being peddled on the street. According to Del Mar Times, "Jean was lamenting about how she was trying to stay away from [it] and noted how if she were a boy, she could probably eat one without regrets. That led to her musing on how if she were a boy, she'd be so much better than her ex." Gad asked Jean to "repeat her sentiments into a recorder". They returned to the studio and wrote the song in 15 minutes. Jean recorded her version of the song.[2] Beyonce recorded her version after BC Jean's version was rejected by her record company.[3]

A Spanish version of the song titled "Si Yo Fuera un Chico" is included on the version of the album sold on iTunes Spain.[4] The Spanish version has an official music video edited from the original clip much like the video for Knowles song "Irreemplazable". "Si Yo Fuera un Chico" has been released as a stand-alone single in various countries, marketed as "Si Yo Fuera un Chico (If I Were a Boy)" to avoid confusion. A remix has been released featuring R. Kelly in which he responds to the comments made by Knowles. The remix is set up as if they were having a conversation. There is another remix with Lee Carr which confronts the song's theme from a male perspective.

Controversy

Knowles was accused of stealing "If I Were A Boy" from upcoming singer BC Jean. Journalist Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com published an account on October 14, 2008 of BC Jean's side of the story stating:

She had no idea Beyonce had even recorded her song until a stranger called with the news . . . according to sources, she and her manager/mother [Lori Carlson] have been strong-armed by Beyonce’s people and others who saw gold in "If I Were a Boy" and didn’t care how they got it . . . plenty of people knew the saga of Beyonce’s manager/father Matthew Knowles’ aggressive pursuit of the publishing rights to the potential hit record. His goal was to get the rights to the song and to put Beyonce’s name on the writing credits.

Knowles' name is not on the writing credits.

Friedman placed blame on Toby Gad for Knowles' receiving of the song also writing in the same article:

Altogether, I am told, B.C. Jean wrote and recorded about a dozen songs with Gad for an album the producer was planning to make of his own. When the deal fell apart, Gad — whose 300 plus credits are all co-written, never solo — took the songs and started marketing them to big name, established artists. Gad’s past "collaborators" include Fergie, on "Big Girls Don't Cry."

Fox News reported that Beyonce and B.C. Jean had come to terms, part of their deal being that Knowles and Jean record a duet for Jean's debut CD. [5]

Reception

Billboard magazine reviewer Chuck Taylor gave the song a positive review, writing: "'If I Were a Boy' is Beyoncé's most affecting offering since 'Listen' from Dreamgirls. Her vocal performance is breathtaking: exquisitely emotive, mournful and mature. Lyrically, the stunning ballad is a tome of torment, as she offers, 'If I were a boy,' I think I could understand how it feels to love a girl/I swear I'd be a better man. Boy, Beyoncé delivers. This is the kind of all-encompassing song that exudes the fragrance of a Grammy Award nod."[6] Bill Lamb of About.com, stated that: "Stylistically, the pair ['If I Were a Boy'/'Single Ladies'] are very distinctive from each other, but both are pure Beyoncé. To my ears, 'If I Were a Boy' sounds like an 'Irreplaceable' size smash. However, that is only if it doesn't get overshadowed by the power bounce of 'Single Ladies,' an extension of the style of 'Get Me Bodied' from B'Day."[7] In a separate review, Lamb continued to praise the song: "'If I Were a Boy' is her greatest achievement yet, and that is certainly saying something." Lamb also said that the song is "Beyonce's best effort yet. The song is one which fits perfectly into her growing repertoire and features a stellar vocal performance. ... Beyonce's controlled but emotional vocal performance is the stuff of which award-winning records are made. 'Irreplaceable' was defeated when nominated for the Record of the Year Grammy. It's quite possible that 'If I Were a Boy' could bring the trophy home. This is a song and recording for the ages."[8] Slant magazine said that the song is "one part "Irreplaceable" one part "Big Girls Don't Cry", and one part Ciara's "Like a Boy". It's definitely a grower but, like "Irreplaceable", the kind that will no doubt circle back around to revulsion after hearing it on the radio for the nth time this holiday season".[9]

Julian Marszalek of Dotmusic gave a mixed reception to the song, writing "It's an interesting enough conceit for a ballad and one that's been previously tackled by no less an authority on the foibles of human nature than William Shakespeare himself. So with this in mind, Beyonce's single is a bit like Twelfth Night but without the jokes, mistaken identity and cross-dressing. But despite her best intentions to find out how men are, she'd be best advised to leave the differences between the genders as a sweet little mystery, before the guys decide to find out what it would be like if they were a girl and she finds that her pantyhose are too big to fit even them."[10]

Chart performance

"If I Were a Boy" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 100, solely based on airplay, on the issue of October 25, 2008.[11] The following week, the song climbed 32 places to number 68 and then it rose considerably in its third week, as the digital download counterpart had been released, jumping 65 spots to number three due to high digital download which totaled to 190,000 eventually making it her tenth top-5 single on the Hot 100 as a solo artist. It fell to number five, but then resumed its number three position. On the following week the song came back to top hot digital songs with 170,000 copies sold. On October the 13th, 2009 the single sold over 2,000,000 units, and has been certified 2x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.[12] The following week it fell to number two on digital sales as it was beaten by Beyonce's own single "Single Ladies" with 204,000 copies sold, while "If I Were A Boy" gained 160,000 copies, bringing her to a new total of 974,000 copies sold in five weeks of release.[13] Beyonce became the seventh female to have two songs in the top five positions.

On October 26, 2008, "If I Were a Boy" was the highest debut of the week, and Beyonce's second highest debut ever, debuting at number 12 on the Australian Singles Chart based solely on downloads. In its second week of physical sales, the single went to number one on the ARIA Physical Singles Chart.[14] The song debuted at number eight in New Zealand on October 27, 2008, and peaked at number two. The song was certified Platinum after twelve weeks selling over 15,000 copies.[15][16] In the United Kingdom, it debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart with 64,554 downloads. In its second chart week, the song fell to number three with sales of 57,917, on the third week "If I Were a Boy" climbed to number one on November 23, 2008 selling 47,949 copies, making it Knowles' fourth number-one single in the United Kingdom as a solo artist[17] and her sixth counting her career with Destiny's Child. "If I Were A Boy" remained in the UK Top 5 at the end of 2008, being named the 16th biggest selling single of the year. Despite being number one for one week on the UK Singles Chart, "If I Were a Boy" spent 5 non-consecutive weeks at the number one position on the UK R&B Chart, until January 18, 2009, it was beaten for the number one spot by Beyonce's own single, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". In the song's 10th chart week, sales exceeded 400,000 copies; the song is Beyonce's first Gold single in the UK and her highest selling solo single and the 68th biggest selling single of the last decade. On the Irish Singles Chart the song peaked at number two for six non-consecutive weeks. In Spain the single achieved Platinum and sold in excess 40,000 copies, helped by the successful Spanish version "Si Yo Fuera Un Chico".

Music video

Knowles portraying an NYPD officer in the official music video for "If I Were A Boy".

The music video for "If I Were a Boy", directed by Jake Nava, was shot in black and white and portrays a narrative about an ordinary day for a couple in a role reversal that is hinted at by the lyrics but is visually revealed only at the end of the video. It begins with Knowles and her husband reciting words such as "intimacy", "honesty", "commitment", "me", and "you". The song starts as her husband prepares breakfast and Knowles takes off to her job as police officer with an attractive male police partner (played by model Ryan Locke) with whom the sparks are clearly flying. While her curves are admired by the police partner, her husband is spending time at his office job looking up a pair of earrings to buy for her online. The husband calls Knowles, only to be ignored by his wife, who is out having a beer "with the guys." That night the husband gives Knowles the earrings and the two leave for a party at which he catches her dancing intimately with her police partner. As the husband confronts her at home, the reversal is revealed and roles are restored; we learn that the husband is actually the police officer with an attractive female partner. Knowles is the office worker who has been snubbed.

The video appeared at #72 on BET: Notarized Top 100 Videos of 2008 countdown and at #29 on BET J's Last Call 2008! Top 50 Countdown. The video was nominated for the BET Award for Video of the Year. A Spanish version of the music video was also released under the title "Si Yo Fuera Un Chico" following the same concept as the English music video with the Spanish version dubbed over it.

Si Yo Fuera un Chico (If I Were a Boy)

"If I Were a Boy" is a pop song sung by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles. It was written by Toby Gad and BC Jean, and produced by Gad and Knowles for her third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008). Alongside "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", the song was released as the album's lead single to U.S. radio on October 8, 2008.

Lauded by contemporary pop critics, the song is the first taste of "I Am ..." and it stands as the only song on either disc that Beyoncé didn't co-write. BC Jean, who wrote most of the song's lyrics, took inspiration in writing the song from a bad break-up. "If I Were a Boy" is different from Beyoncé's previous songs in the sense that the song is not a traditional R&B song. A Spanish version of the song titled "Si Yo Fuera un Chico" is included on the version of the album sold on iTunes Spain.

The music video for "If I Were a Boy", directed by Jake Nava, was shot in black and white. The video is both compelling and reflective of the independent woman stance that Beyoncé has exhibited throughout most of her career. The Spanish version also has an official music video edited from the original clip.

The single topped the charts in over eight European countries, and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. In the United Kingdom, it climbed to number one on November 23, 2008, making it Knowles' fourth number-one single in the United Kingdom as a solo artist, and her sixth one counting her career with Destiny's Child. The song went on to earn Platinum certifications by the ARIA, the RIANZ, the BPI and the RIAA,"If I Were a Boy" is Knowles' best-selling single in the United Kingdom with sales of 610,000 units. As of July 2010, "If I Were a Boy" has sold 2,393,000 units in the United States. Reba McEntire did her version of the song for CMT unplugged.

Writing and inspiration

Jean recorded her version of the song.[2] Knowles recorded her version after BC Jean's version was rejected by her record company.[3]

Composition

"If I Were a Boy" is a pop song set in common time composed in a moderate tempo of 90 beats per minute,[5] in the key of G major with a vocal range from the tone of G♯3 to the note of E5.[5] The song is the first taste of "I Am ..." and it stands as the only song on either disc that Beyoncé didn't co-write. BC Jean, who wrote most of the song's lyrics, took inspiration in writing "If I Were a Boy" from a bad break-up.[2] Knowles explained Essence Magazine that "If I Were a Boy" is different from her previous songs"[6] in the sense that the song is not a traditional R&B song.[7] She wanted to try something fresh with stronger lyrics because people have strong expectations.[8] The singer further explained that the song is broad but she had to try it because she remembered that Aretha Franklin said that a great singer can sing anything and make it her own."[6]

Controversy

Knowles was accused of stealing "If I Were A Boy" from upcoming singer BC Jean. Roger Friedman, commenting for FoxNews.com, published an account on October 14, 2008 of BC Jean's side of the story stating:

She had no idea Beyoncé had even recorded her song until a stranger called with the news... according to sources, she and her manager/mother [Lori Carlson] have been strong-armed by Beyoncé's people and others who saw gold in "If I Were a Boy" and didn't care how they got it... plenty of people knew the saga of Beyoncé's manager/father Mathew Knowles' aggressive pursuit of the publishing rights to the potential hit record. His goal was to get the rights to the song and to put Beyoncé's name on the writing credits.

Knowles' name however, is not on the writing credits.

Fox News reported that Knowles and B.C. Jean had come to terms, part of their deal being that Knowles and Jean record a duet for Jean's debut CD.[9]

This is the kind of all-encompassing song that exudes the fragrance of a Grammy Award nod."[10] Bill Lamb of About.com, stated that: "Stylistically, the pair ['If I Were a Boy'/'Single Ladies'] are very distinctive from each other, but both are pure Beyoncé. To my ears, 'If I Were a Boy' sounds like an 'Irreplaceable' size smash. However, that is only if it doesn't get overshadowed by the power bounce of 'Single Ladies,' an extension of the style of 'Get Me Bodied' from B'Day."[11] In a separate review, Lamb continued to praise the song: "'If I Were a Boy' is her greatest achievement yet, and that is certainly saying something." Lamb also said that the song is "Beyoncé's best effort yet. The song is one which fits perfectly into her growing repertoire and features a stellar vocal performance. ... Beyoncé's controlled but emotional vocal performance is the stuff of which award-winning records are made. 'Irreplaceable' was defeated when nominated for the Record of the Year Grammy. It's quite possible that 'If I Were a Boy' could bring the trophy home. This is a song and recording for the ages."[12] Slant Magazine said that the song is "one part "Irreplaceable" one part "Big Girls Don't Cry", and one part Ciara's "Like a Boy". It's definitely a grower but, like "Irreplaceable", the kind that will no doubt circle back around to revulsion after hearing it on the radio for the nth time this holiday season".[13]

Julian Marszalek of Dotmusic gave a mixed reception to the song, writing "It's an interesting enough conceit for a ballad and one that's been previously tackled by no less an authority on the foibles of human nature than William Shakespeare himself. So with this in mind, Beyoncé's single is a bit like Twelfth Night but without the jokes, mistaken identity and cross-dressing. But despite her best intentions to find out how men are, she'd be best advised to leave the differences between the genders as a sweet little mystery, before the guys decide to find out what it would be like if they were a girl and she finds that her pantyhose are too big to fit even them."[14]

Chart performance

"If I Were a Boy" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 100, solely based on airplay, on October 25, 2008.[15] The following week, the song climbed 32 places to number 68[16] and then rose considerably in its third week (November 8, 2008) as the digital download counterpart had debuted directly at #1 on Hot Digital Songs after its release.[17] It consequently jumped 65 spots to land at number three on the Hot 100[18] due to high digital downloads which totaled to 190,000 units, eventually making "If I Were a Boy" Beyoncé's tenth top-5 single on the Hot 100 as a solo artist. On November 15, 2008 it fell to number five,[19] where it stayed for one further week[20]. However, it then managed to resume its number three position on November 29, 2008[21] as it came back to the top spot of the Hot Digital Songs with 170,000 copies sold.[22][23] It remained at its peak of #3 for further two weeks[21] and then (on December 6, 2008), it fell to number two on digital sales as it was beaten by Knowles' another own single "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" which had debuted #1 on the Hot Digital Songs Chart with 204,000 copies sold. "If I Were A Boy" gained 160,000 copies, bringing her to a new total of 974,000 copies sold in the first five weeks of release.[24] Knowles became the seventh female to have two songs in the top five positions.[25] On October 13, 2009, the single sold over 2,000,000 units, and was certified 2x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.[26] As of July 2010, "If I Were a Boy" has sold 2,393,000 units in the United States.[27]

On November 2, 2008, "If I Were a Boy" was the highest debut of the week, and Knowles' second highest debut ever, debuting at number 12 on the Australian Singles Chart based solely on downloads.[28] In its second week of physical sales, the single went to number one on the ARIA Physical Singles Chart.[29] However, the single peaked at #3 on the ARIA main Singles Chart for three non-consecutive weeks in November 2008.[30][31][32] The song debuted at number eight in New Zealand on October 27, 2008[33] and peaked at number two for four non-consecutive weeks in November and December 2008.[34][35][36][37] The song was certified Platinum after twelve weeks selling over 15,000 copies.[38][39] In the United Kingdom, it debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart with 64,554 downloads. In its second chart week, the song fell to number three with sales of 57,917, on the third week "If I Were a Boy" climbed to number one on November 23, 2008 selling 47,949 copies, making it Knowles' fourth number-one single in the United Kingdom as a solo artist,[40] and her sixth counting her career with Destiny's Child. "If I Were A Boy" remained in the UK Top 5 at the end of 2008, being named the 16th biggest selling single of the year. Despite being number one for one week on the UK Singles Chart, "If I Were a Boy" spent 5 non-consecutive weeks at the number one position on the UK R&B Chart, until January 18, 2009, it was beaten for the number one spot by Knowles' own single, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". In the song's 10th chart week, sales exceeded 400,000 copies; the song is Knowles' first Gold single in the UK, her highest selling solo single and the 68th biggest selling single of the last decade. On the Irish Singles Chart the song peaked at number two for six non-consecutive weeks. In Spain the single achieved Platinum and sold in excess 40,000 copies, helped by the successful Spanish version "Si Yo Fuera Un Chico".

Music video

The music video for "If I Were a Boy", directed by Jake Nava, was shot in black and white. Beyonce said that the video is both compelling and reflective of the independent woman stance that she has exhibited throughout most of her career.[41] It portrays a narrative about an ordinary day for a couple in a role reversal that is hinted at by the lyrics. This is visually revealed only at the end of the video where we get to realise that the husband is a cop and what the female character [Beyonce] has been doing throughout the video is what the male character has had actually done to her all along. She wonders what women would do if they were men.[41]

It begins with Knowles and her husband (played by NFL player Eddie Goines) reciting words such as "intimacy", "honesty", "commitment", "me", and "you". The song starts as her husband prepares breakfast and Knowles takes off to her job as police officer with an attractive male police partner (played by supermodel Ryan Locke) with whom the sparks are clearly flying. As the husband confronts her at home, the reversal is revealed and roles are restored; we learn that the husband is actually the police officer with the female partner.

The music video has been certified Gold by Recording Industry Of Canada in July 2009.[42]

Reba McEntire version

The song was covered by American country singer Reba McEntire on CMT Unplugged. The cover was accompanied by a music video premiered June 18, 2010, which involves McEntire performing the song live. A recorded version is included in the track listing on her upcoming album All the Women I Am.
