From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

llan Harari is a retired brigadier general Israel Defense Forces. He is most known for serving as the Chief Education Officer of the IDF. He has served in several combat positions, including a command position in the Nahal Brigade and as a battalion commander in the Golani Brigade.

On September 22, 2006, he announced his imminent retirement. He also stated at a news conference that Israel had lost the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict. He was the first serving senior staff officer to voice such an opinion. Subsequently, General Yiftah Ron-Tal voiced the same opinion while on duty. Chief of Staff Dan Halutz reacted angrily to Harari's statement.[1]

Ironically, prior to his public announcement, Harari had been heading a project to identify positive aspects and heroic action during the war and compile them. He is quoted as saying:

We heard about the complaints, the difficulties, the confusion, but in all that, there are plenty of heroic tales ... and these should be elevated so that every division in the IDF knows what happened there...

—Ilan Harari[2]
