From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ilona is a Hungarian female name of uncertain origin. Interpretations vary from a popular but unfounded belief that the name represents the Magyar form of Helen, to an ancient word for "moon".

More probable, given the historic and pre-Magyar Jewish presence in Hungary and the gneral Danube area, is a link to Hebrew name Ilana, meaning "tree", which might be supported by the popular folk story of Ilona, the tree fairy, as found in Prince Argyilus And The Fairy Ilona in Nandor Pogány's Magyar Fairytales From Old Hungarian Legends.

The name may refer to:

  • Ilona Andrews, a Russian fantasy novelist
  • Ilona Borská, a Czech author and journalist
  • Ilona Baráth, a Slovak actress
  • Ilona Csáková, a Czech jazz singer
  • Ilona Grübel, a German actress
  • Ilona Györi, a Hungarian actress
  • Ilona Jirotková, a Czech actress
  • Ilona Kubásková, a Czech actress
  • Ilona Massey, a Hungarian actress
  • Ilona Mitrecey (born 1993), a French singer
  • Ilona Ostrowska, a Polish actress
  • Ilona Petržílková, a Czech actress
  • Ilona Senderek (born 1988), a Polish figure skater
  • Ilona Svobodová, a Czech actress
  • Ilona Vaňková, a Czech actress
