The Intercloud[1] is an interconnected global "cloud of clouds"[2][3] and an extension of the Internet "network of networks" on which it is based[4]. The term was first used in the context of cloud computing in 2007 when Kevin Kelly opined that "eventually we'll have the intercloud, the cloud of clouds. This Intercloud will have the dimensions of one machine comprising all servers and attendant cloudbooks on the planet."[2]. It became popular in 2009[5] and has also been used to describe the datacenter of the future[6].

Trend Micro applied for U.S. Trademark 77,018,125 on 10 October 2006 and were granted a "Notice of Allowance" on 5 August 2008 (the same week that Dell Computer's controversial application for "cloud computing" was discovered[7] and denied[8]). They sought and received an extension to file a statement of use on 31 January 2009 and needed to do so (or request another extension) by 5 August 2009. They did request another 6 month extension on 2009-08-04 and can continue to do so until 2011-08-05.
