Irinjalakuda is a town in the south Indian state of Kerala, which is noted for its age-old presence and harmonious existence of Hindu and Christian cultures. It is famous for the sprawling Koodalmanikyam Temple that has Bharata (Ramayana) as the main deity, even as the place is dotted by several other shrines and vintage churches. Irinjalakuda has prestigious performing arts institutes like the Unnayi Varrier Smaraka Kalanilayam (for Kathakali), Ammannur Gurukulam and Natana Kairali (both for Koodiyattam), besides the Yajurveda Patashala that gives training in Vedic rituals. In the present times it has groomed Malayalam authors like K. Satchidanandan, Anand, and famous malayalam critic Prof.Mampuzha Kumaran. Moreover, it is the birthplace of Malayalam film actors Innocent, Edavela Babu and 'Mayuri'Sudha Chandran, besides renowned playback singer P Jayachandran and film director Mohan. Ammannur Madhava Chakyar, who gave Koodiyattam a global address, lived in Irinjalakuda until his death in 2008. Popular Kathakali artist Sadanam Krishnankutty too has made Irinjalakuda his home for long.Late R Gopalakrishnan (RGK) Editor of Times of India, Carnatic Music Critic is from Irinjalakuda.Kavitha Balakrishnan, well known art painter ,researcher,poet and Lecturer in Art History at Gvt finearts college ,thrissur .she born and brought up at Irinjalakuda.

Irinjalakuda is well known for Coconut oil industries and allied products. The famous Brands such as KPL shudhi, KLF Nirmal, Chandrika Soap, KSE Ltd (Cattle Feeds) all hail from the town.

Events such as Pindi Perunnal, Koodalmanikyam utsavam & Shashti are very famous. Thousands of spectators flood into Irinjalakuda to watch these events. Moreover the recently started cultural celebration namely Thanima Irinjalakuda has attracted a lot from the suburbs.

Irinjalakuda was the first sub-district in Kerala to be announced as 100 per cent computer-literate.

Christ College in Irinjalakuda is one of the oldest and most famous colleges in India for arts and sciences. It is also a popular filming location.



Irinjalakuda is located at 10°20′N 76°14′E / 10.33°N 76.23°E / 10.33; 76.23[1]. It has an average elevation of 39 metres (127 feet).


Many festivals take place in Irinjalakuda. They are:

  • Pindi Perunnal , in St. Thomas Cathedral , takes place in the first/second week of January
  • Very auspicious "ANJAMBALA DARSHANAM" by the month of Karkkidakam( July/Aug).Devotees from different parts of Kerala used to visit the five temples of SriRama( Triprayar),Bharata( Irinjalakuda),Shatrughna(Payammal), Laxmana(Moozhikkulam)& Hanuman (Nadavaramba)
  • The Sree ViswanathaPuram Temple Shasthi takes place in late January or early February. It is famous for its pookavadi (multicoloured floral pyramids).
  • Sree Kallada Temple Porathissery.
  • ( Sree Olluparambil ellavallikavu Bhagavathy Temple Chungam )

Colleges and Schools

There is a strong presence of first-class educational institutions in this town, in the form of several schools, colleges and other coaching classes. They are either run by the state government or in private hands. They regularly show excellent results in state examinations as well as other competitions. Colleges in this town come under the [University of Calicut].

Irinjalakuda is located on State Highway 22, which links to major national highways NH47 and NH17 in the state. Irinjalakuda is 20 km south of Thrissur and the Irinjalakuda town railway station is located 7 km away from the town centre at Kalletumkara en route to Chalakudy. Nearby towns are [Chalakudy] which is 18 km east, the temple town of Kodungalloor 16 km south, Edathirinji is 8 km southwest of Irinjalakuda. The sea shore is 7 km on its west.

The nearest railway station is the Irinjalakuda Railway Station which is about 7 km east of the town at Kallettumkara. Most trains stop at this station. The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, 34 km away.

Health Care

Irinjalakuda has several hospitals and health clinics, including the Taluk Headquarters Hospital, the Ayurveda Hospital, as well as the ESI Dispensary. The newly completed co-operative hospital at Nadavaramba provides multispeciality diagnosis and treatment in all medical fields. Marina hospital and the Taluk hospitals at the Tana junction are easily accessible.


As of 2001 India census[2], Irinjalakuda had a population of 28,873. Males constitute 48% of the population and females 52%.

Irinjalakuda has an average literacy rate of 87% which is much higher than the national average of 59.5%. While male literacy stands at 88%, female literacy is 86%.

10% of the population is under 6 years of age.


Irinjalakuda assembly constituency was a part of Mukundapuram (Lok Sabha constituency).[3] Now it is a part of Trichur (Lok Sabha constituency). The MLA of the municipality is Adv. Thomas Unniyadan. He has been pushing for a District status for Irinjalakuda in the state assembly. Lonappan Nambadan was the last MP of Mukundapuram, now the MP is PC Chacko.
