"Israel's Son" is a song by Australian rock band Silverchair. It was the third single released from their debut full-length album, Frogstomp, which was released in 1995, as was "Israel's Son". It was also released on their The Best of Volume 1.

It is the only Frogstomp song still played live by the band. The song is now taken half a step down, likely to compensate for Daniel Johns' changing vocals.

Song meaning

According to lead singer/guitarist Daniel Johns, "It's about an execution I saw on telly... I got this video of an execution, and I just saw it, and I was watching it one night, and I had a dream about it, and I woke up and thought, 'Oh yeah, that's pretty cool', and I wrote a song about it."[1]

Music video

There were two versions of the video, both done by director Nigel Dick. The first version features a man running full-speed through a dead forest, falling all over the place. Another man has built a gallows and is setting up the ropes. He pulls a boxer puppy out of a canvas bag and puts him into a cage. Looking at the dog, the man sits down and begins to tie a noose. Shots of the band singing in a building alternate between the storyline shots. Finally, the guy makes it to the gallows, but the cage is open and empty. He looks up into the sky and screams, but then sees his dog in the distance tied to a tree, still alive. ("You're late for the execution/ If you're not here soon I'll kill your friend instead").

The second version was created even after the original version had been in rotation for some time. But after the "Israel's Son murders", Sony/Epic decided that they didn't like the liability of the original version. So all of the storyline (with the men and the dog) was cut from the video to create a new "censored" version that replaced the original only in the U.S. This video now only featured Silverchair playing the song in the building.
