Yuta Iyama (井山裕太 Iyama Yūta ?, born May 24, 1989) is a Japanese professional Go player.

Biography

Iyama made history by becoming the youngest player to win the title of Meijin at the age of 20. By the time he reached the level of 1 dan in Japan, he was only 12 years old. He quickly rose among the ranks, achieving 4 dan in 2005. Then he leapfrogged to 7 dan in the same year when he won the 12th Japanese Agon Cup. In 2008 he was promoted to 8 dan for challenging for the Meijin title. One year later he won the title, thus being promoted to 9 dan.

About Iyama's style, John Fairbairn said: "Iyama plays thickly, waits for the opponent to attack, then tries to take the initiative with his counterattack."
