Joe Penna, known online as MysteryGuitarMan, is a guitarist, animator, and filmmaker. He is originally from São Paulo, Brazil [1]. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California. As of February 2010, he is the most subscribed Brazilian user of all time on YouTube, with over 535000 subscriptions.[2] His videos have been viewed over 24 million times.[3]

On February 18 2010, Penna started a second channel, jp. Within 6 hours, it became the 3rd most subscribed channel in Brazil [1]. It is now the 2nd most subscribed channel in that country.

Career

Penna attended the University of Massachusetts until 2007, majoring in medicine. While in medical school, Penna devoted his free time to producing online videos. He then quit medical school and turned to cinematography, working on music videos and commercials in and around Boston.

When his cinematography opportunities began to dry up as a result of the late-2000s recession, Penna began producing YouTube videos full-time. [4]

In 2007, Penna received media coverage after his The Puzzle video was featured on the front page of YouTube, including Fox News, DC. [5]

In 2009, Penna was again seen on the front page of YouTube with his Guitar: Impossible video, which has been covered by De Wereld Draait Door, the highest-rating primetime show in the Netherlands[6]. On December 6 2009, Penna was featured on FM4, an Austrian national radio station [7]. On February 20 2009, a copy of Guitar:Impossible uploaded by StupidVideos.com was featured on the MSN.com front page.

Best Buy announced Penna as the $15,000 winner of their Tech-U-Out Video Challenge. He was also a finalist in Oreo's Moments video competition. Recently, Ford has selected Penna as a Fiesta Agent for the 2011 Ford Fiesta Movement.[8]

In 2009, Penna's Guitar: Impossible video was featured by YouTube as one of the best videos of 2009.[9] In 2010, Penna's Root Beer Mozart was featured on CNN's morning show Morning Express with Robin Meade and on Germany's nationally broadcasted Taff.
