John Friedrich (possibly also known as Friedrich Hohenberger) was Managing Director of the National Safety Council of Australia during the 1980s.
On 6 April 1989, John Friedrich was arrested after borrowing vast sums of money from Australian banks. He was later described as Australia's greatest conman when it was exposed he had faked career qualifications and was living in Australia under a false passport. On 23 July 1991 he appeared in court to face 91 fraud related charges involving over AUD$293 million.
On 27 July 1991, he was found dead on his farm near Sale, Victoria with a single gunshot wound to his head. His death was ruled a suicideIt is unlikely however that John's death actually was a suicide. It is not possible to shoot yourself in the back of the head with a shotgun. One the day of John's death I was on duty as a staff member at the Sale T.A.B. A local SES voluteer who I shall only identify as 'Simmy' came into the T.A.B shocked and shaken to talk to the Agent. Simmy was given coffee and said he'd assisted Police in the search for the missing man, John Friedrich, and he was found on a dam bank with a shotgun wound to the back of the head, and the weapon next to him. Simmy assisted Police in removal of the body. Sale Police and Coroners were advised by the Govt. to rule the death a suicide, but it is likely John was murdered by agents of the Australian or other international Governments. To this day the lost money has never been recovered.
