Sir John Popham (d. 1463 (?)), military commander and speaker-elect of the House of Commons; took part in Henry V's invasion of France in 1416 and in the French wars under the John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford; elected speaker of the House of Commons (M.P., Hampshire), 1449, but was permitted by Henry VI to decline the office on the ground of infirmity.[1]
