John W. Mallet (1832-1912) he was born in Dublin,Ireland. He was the son of Robert Mallet and
Cordeila (Watson) Mallet of Dublin,Ireland. He was an Irish born chemist who
settled and taught in the United States. [1][2][3]
He married Mary Elizabeth Ormond (1836-1886), in 1857. She was the
daughter of the Hon. John James
Ormond. His second marriage was to Josephine Burtlhe of La., in
1888.
He had an A.B. from Trinity College
Dublin 1853, a P.H.D. from the University of Göttingen 1852. a
M.D. from the University of Louisiana 1868
and a L.L.D. from the college of William &
Mary 1872.
During the U.S. Civil War, he was appointed Superintendent of the
Confederate Ordnance Laboratories and held the rank of Lt.
Colonel.[4
] He was an officer on the staff of General Rader
C.S.A. .
In 1961, Mallet Assembly, a self governing residential honors program was created by The University of Alabama. Mallet Assembly was located in Mallet Hall, named for John W. Mallet. [5 ] [3]
