Jonai is a sub-division of Dhemaji District in the state of Assam in India. According to 2001 consensus, the population of Jonai is 143,199. Jonai has a literacy rate of 48.78% according to 2001 census. But currently it has literacy rate above the national level.

Politics

Jonai is part of Lakhimpur (Lok Sabha constituency).[1] Jonai is a Vidhan Sabha Constituency. Moreover Jonai is a very beautiful and small town situated near the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra river. It lies on the border of Arunachal Pradesh state. It is also the last railway station of the Indian Railway which stretches towards the east. The name of the railway station is ‘Murkong Selek’. Jonai is known for its scenic beauty and natural resources. A vast forest reserve is situated on the banks of the river Brahmaputra near ‘Tinmile Ghat’ from where ferry or boat service is available to move towards Dibrugarh. Many wild animals like Tiger, Elephant, Deer, Mongoose, Snake, Bear, and Monkey are found in those forests. This area has a good scope for making a wildlife sanctuary. Tinmile Ghat is also a good picnic spot with a good view of the Brahmaputra and a part of the Himalayan Range. There are also many beautiful picnic spot near surrounding Jonai in the Arunachal Pradesh area. Jonai has a good scope for Tourism for its scenic beauty and green flora and fauna. There is also a good scope for investment here, this paradise is still unexplored now. And there is plenty of land for developing an Airport here which will benefit the people of Arunachal Pradesh as well as Assam. The main tribe here is ‘Mishings’. Ali-Aye Lvgang is a popular festival among them. On that day they prepare a local home made rice beer known as ‘Apong’, also they serve their guests with ‘Purang bhat’ and ‘Pork Curry’ its really very tasty. There is a good arrangement for tourists at Jonai. One can stay at ‘Circuit House’ or hotels Like ‘Beauty Hotel & Restaurant’ situated near the Railway station of Jonai (Murkong Selek). There are many shops at the Jonai Bazar area where commodities are found for day to day need etc.
