The Joplin Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties – Jasper and Newton – in southwest Missouri, anchored by the city of Joplin. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 157,322, though a July 1, 2008 estimate placed the population at 172,933.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 157,322 people, 61,552 households, and 42,695 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 92.80% White, 1.18% African American, 1.63% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.03% of the population.

The median income for a household in the MSA was $33,182, and the median income for a family was $39,114. Males had a median income of $29,315 versus $20,883 for females. The per capita income for the MSA was $16,865.
