Jorge de Lencastre or George of
Portugal (Jorge: Portuguese
pronunciation: [ˈʒɔɾʒ(ɨ)]), 1481-1550, was a Portuguese Prince, natural
son of King John II of
Portugal and Ana de Mendonça, a maid of Joanna La
Beltraneja.
George was born in Abrantes on August 21st, 1481. After the death of the royal
heir, his half brother Price Afonso, King John II
did all he could to pass the Portuguese throne to the hands of
George. Between 1491 and 1494 King John gave him the titles of
Master of Santiago and of Aviz, the Duchy of Coimbra and the lordship of Montemor-o-Velho.
However, the throne was inherited by the King's cousin (and
brother-in-law), Manuel, 4th Duke of Beja, who became Manuel
I.
In 1500, George married Beatriz
de Vilhena, daughter of Álvaro of Braganza, brother of the
Ferdinand II, Duke of Braganza.
George had several children of his marriage with Beatriz de
Vilhena:
- João de
Lencastre, 1st Duke of Aveiro
- Afonso de Lencastre, Comendador-mor of São Tiago
- Luís de Lencastre, Comendador-mor of Aviz
- Jaime de Lencastre, Prior of São Pedro de Torres Vedras, 1st
General-inquisitor of the kingdom
- Helena de Lencastre, Comendadeira of the Royal
Monastery of Santos
- Maria de Lencastre, religious in the Monastery of Saint John in
Setúbal (Soror Maria
Madalena)
- Filipa de Lencastre, Prior of the Monastery of Saint John in
Setúbal
- Isabel de Lencastre, religious in the Monastery of Saint John
in Setúbal and after that in the Royal Monastery of Santos.
And also had several natural children.
George died in the castle of Palmela on July 22nd, 1550.
George was a direct descendant of Alfred the Great, William the Conqueror, and Edward
III, through a daughter of John of Gaunt. He was
also descended from John I of Portugal.
