Josh Heupel, (born March 22, 1978), is the current quarterbacks coach at the University of Oklahoma and former quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners football team (1999-2000).

Personal

Heupel was raised, and played high school football, in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He is recently married.

His sister, Andrea Heupel, is married to Democratic U.S. politician Dan Boren.

College career

Heupel began his collegiate playing career at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, and spent one season at Snow College, a junior college located in Ephraim, Utah, before transferring to Oklahoma.

He was the Heisman Trophy runner up in 2000. He was also an All-American (2000), the AP Player of the Year, and Walter Camp Award winner in 2000. Heupel led the Sooners to an undefeated regular season and a national championship victory over Florida State in the 2001 Orange Bowl.^[1][2]

Heupel was drafted in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.^[3] Compromised by shoulder tendinitis of his throwing arm left over from his outstanding college career, he was relegated to fourth string for the entire preseason, failed to make the team, and did not further pursue a career in professional football.

Coaching career

Heupel spent the 2004 season as a graduate assistant for the University of Oklahoma football team under his college coach of 1999-2000, Bob Stoops. In 2005, Heupel was hired as the tight-ends coach for the University of Arizona football team by newly-appointed coach Mike Stoops, brother of Bob. Since 2005, Heupel has been quarterbacks coach for the University of Oklahoma.
