Ravikumar is a science graduate from Pachiappas College in Tamil Nadu though he belongs to the Madurai belt. He studied and graduated with a D.F.T in 1985. From 1985 through 1990- he was Assistant Director to prominent film director Bharathi Raja before breaking on his own in 1989. Also he worked as an Assistant Director with Director Vikraman in the film "Pudhu Vasantham".
Ravikumar's directorial career started with the film Puriyaadha Pudhir. His next film was Cheran Pandiyan in 1990, his first hit; which also was his friend Sarath Kumar's first film in the lead. After that Ravikumar made many films with Sarath Kumar such as Nattamai (1994) and later Natpukkaga (1998) turned out to be the biggest blockbusters of their combination. He landed himself with the major task of directing Rajinikanth in Muthu which he did successfully and therefore many other offers other than those with Sarath Kumar arrived his way including films with Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan, Chiranjeevi, Ajith Kumar, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Joseph Vijay and Madhavan. A trademark of his films is the cameo appearance that he puts in each of the films.
He is currently directing Jaggubhai, starring Sarath Kumar and Shriya Saran. He then started filming Aadhavan with Surya Sivakumar and Nayanthara, which started 16 February 2009. Aadhavan has now finished filming and went worldwide on 18 October 2009.
