The KTX-I (also known as TGV-K) is a South Korean high speed train set based on the TGV Reseau.[1]

The KTX-I was ordered as part of the development of infrastructure and rolling stock for a South Korean high speed train service based on the french TGV system. The initial contract was signed in 1994, and the first KTX trainset produced in France in 1997. The first test run took place in 1999, and in 2000 speeds of 300 kilometres per hour (190 mph) had been achieved and twelve trainsets had been imported from France. The remaining 34 of the 46 trainsets ordered were built under license in Korea itself.[2]
Though based on the TGV-Reseau variant of the TGV technology the trains differ from European TGV systems in a number of ways. The sets consist of twenty vehicles each, exceeding the length of all TGV trainsets used in France (except for the British Rail Class 373 "Eurostar" trains); and the passenger facilities do not include any bar or restaurant cars. There are rotating seats in the first class sections.[2]
The Korean rail industry used the KTX-I as the basis of the prototype train HSR-350x, which in turn led to orders for an indigenous high speed train the KTX-II.[3]
