Kalamassery (Malayalam: കളമശ്ശേരി) is a municipality and town in India in the Ernakulam district of the southern state of Kerala. It is also a part of the Kochi metropolitan area. It is a concentrated region of industrialization with several factories manufacturing chemicals and fertilizers, as well as IT companies. In the vicinity of Kalamassery are the Thrikkakara temple, the Cochin University of Science and Technology and the Eloor industrial township. The Periyar river flows through Kalamassery.

Overview

Kalamassery is a relatively newly minted town and lies between Ernakulam city and the old town of Alwaye. Kalamassery is geographically divided into a few smaller areas.

  • North Kalamassery borders with the towns Aluva and Eloor in the north. The Apollo Tyres factory, HMT factory, the Kalamassery Mahaganapathy temple are located here. The Kalamassery railway station, which primarily functions as a stop for goods trains loading and unloading for the local factories, is located here.
  • South Kalamassery borders with Thrikkakara village in the south, and is the seat of the Municipality (earlier a Panchayat). Residential colonies such as Shanti Nagar and Changampuzha Nagar are located here.
  • Further south lies Pathadippalam which borders with the suburb town of Edappally. The Museum of Kerala History is located here.

The National Highway NH47 coming from Aluva enters North Kalamassery and runs through South Kalamassery, Pathadipalam, Edapally and into the Cochin bypass road.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[1], Kalamassery had a population of 63,176. Sex ratio is 956 females per 1000 males. Kalamassery has an average literacy rate of 84%, which is well higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 87%, and female literacy is 82%. In Kalamassery, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. Although Hindus are the single largest community, sizeable amounts of the population follow Christianity and Islam.

Education

Several schools and educational institutions are present in Kalamassery. The sprawling campus of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is located in Thrikkakara village which borders Kalamassery to the south. Apart from CUSAT the following educational institutions are located in or near Kalamassery.
