Kama Chinen (知念 カマ Chinen Kama?, born 10 May 1895 in Okinawa, Japan), who, at the age of 114,[1] became the world's oldest person when American Gertrude Baines died on 11 September 2009,[2] She is one of the 30 oldest people ever.


Health status

In September 2008, Chinen was reported to be in a wheelchair: "Though her daily activities require assistance, she enjoys going outside in a wheelchair with a nurse, the ministry said."[3]

Longevity records

  • On 5 April 2008 Kaku Yamanaka died, and Chinen, aged 112 years 331 days, became the oldest verified living Japanese person.
  • On 4 December 2008, Chinen, aged 113 years 208 days, moved into the list of the 100 longest-lived people ever.
  • On 11 September 2009 Gertrude Baines died, and Chinen, aged 114 years 124 days, became the oldest verified person in the world.
  • On 6 February 2010, Chinen, aged 114 years 272 days, became the 30th oldest verified person ever.
