History

The Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Karachi is premier Chamber of the country, representing the mainstream of economic activities by virtue of its location in industrial and commercial hub of the country. The present Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Karachi was formed in 1959 through the amalgamation of four trade bodies in Karachi at that time, namely, the Pakistan Merchants Association, Buyers and Shippers Chamber, Chamber of Commerce Pakistan and All Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry. It was restricted under the Trade Organization Ordinance 1961, which regulates the working of the Trade Bodies in the country.

Composition

The Chamber is affiliated with the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry. It has two classes of membership, namely, Members and Town Associations. This Chamber has currently around 14,861 direct members both industrialists and traders. Five Industrial Town Associations, namely, S.I.T.E., Landhi, Korangi, Federal 'B' Area, and North Karachi, are affiliated with it.

Thus, the Chamber's effective membership comes to around 50,000. As a consequence of its location in a commercial, financial and industrial center of the country, it represents the main-stream of economic activities.

Management

The organization's policies and programs are determined by the 30 members of Managing Committee which are elected by the members, out of which 1/2 retire every year and in their place, new members are inducted through election. The President elected by the members (General Body) and the Managing Committee every year elects Senior Vice President and Vice-President. President controls the working of office and staff and directs all matters of the Chamber, with the assistance of Senior Vice-President and Vice-President.
