Kelly Jean Killoren was born in 1968, and raised in Rockford, Illinois. She began working as a model at the age of 15. Killoren was the third wife of French fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon, who was formerly International Creative Director of Elle magazine; the couple has two daughters, born in 1999 and 2001. The couple divorced in July 2007. The former Mrs. Bensimon now resides in New York City and East Hampton.
Killoren Bensimon initially attended Trinity College, Connecticut, but left after a year[1]. She later enrolled at the Columbia University School of General Studies, majoring in English[2], and graduated with a degree in literature and writing[1] in 1998[3].
Kelly began her modeling career in New York City. She has appeared in magazines such as ELLE, Cosmopolitan, and Harper's Bazaar. She was also the face of Clarins. She is the editor at large for Hamptons Magazine[4] and Gotham Magazine[5]. She is the founding editor Elle Accessories Magazine[6]. She has authored several books including In The Spirit of the Hamptons, American Style, and The Bikini Book[7]. Kelly also wrote a column in Page Six Magazine called The Socializer: Kelly Killoren Bensimon[8].
Killoren-Bensimon has been host of the IMG (business) fashion week, and of the IMG swim shows in Miami. She was a spokesperson in 2006 for Wool [9] as part of their Test Marketing Productions (TMP;) however, a current search of the Wool website indicates no 2009 relationship or representation [10]. Bensimon has hosted menswear events with GQ magazine. She was also an "ambassador" for Spring 2007 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week [11] in New York City. Killoren Bensimon launched her jewelry line "Kelly" at Bloomingdale's in fall 2007. A pendant featured in this jewelry line has recently become the subject of a lawsuit.
From 7 March 2009 to 5 May 2009, Killoren Bensimon appeared on Bravo's second season of The Real Housewives of New York City[12].
The owl design that Bensimon displays and promotes on The Real Housewives of New York City was allegedly not designed by Bensimon, but by designer Celeste Greenberg, founder of jewelry line Tuleste Market. A legal case has been initiated by Greenberg for copyright infringement and breach of contract. The case has been dropped as of 4 May 2009.[13][14]
Killoren Bensimon was arrested on 5 March 2009 and charged with assaulting her boyfriend Nicholas Stefanov.[15] Stefanov filed an in-person criminal complaint with the NYPD and was photographed as part of the complaint with visible facial wounds.[16]. The criminal complaint stated that Bensimon hit Stefanov "with a closed fist, thereby causing informant to suffer a laceration below informant's left eye and substantial pain." An initial criminal hearing was held on 5 March 2009; the case has been dismissed as of 10 August 2009.[17] The specific charge is "Assault with Intent to Cause Physical Injury, a Misdemeanor" according to the New York State Unified Court System, Case 2009NY017759.[18]
