Early life

Kerli was born in Elva, Estonia during the Soviet Union which ended when she was 4-years-old. Despite being discouraged, Kerli dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue her musical career.[1] As a teen, she studied singing, dancing, acting, and piano. In 2002, she won Fizz Superstar, a singing competition of three Baltic countries with which she gained a singing contact. The contract was unsuccessful and the media in Estonia labeled failure as "Kerli Syndrome". Kerli has stated she feels no resentment towards her home country, as she told Neon Limelight in a 2008 interview:

No, I don’t feel any resentment. For a while, because I left Estonia and Estonians didn’t hear anything about me so all these Estonian young singers were like… I guess they’re slowly turning around now and understanding that I really was doing something here.[2]

In 2004, she was the runner-up in that year's Eurolaul, a televised competition that determines the song that will represent Estonia in the Eurovision Song Contest. She continued to perform and write songs, ultimately scoring an audition with L.A. Reid, who signed her to Island Def Jam Music Group in 2006.

Career

2006-2008: Love is Dead & Kerli EP

In 2006, Kerli signed a contract with Island Records. Kerli worked with producer, songwriter, and mixer David Maurice on an autobiographical set of songs, the first batch of which were released on a self-titled EP in 2007 and her debut album, titled Love Is Dead released on July 8, 2008. It includes the songs "Walking On Air," "Butterfly Cry", and "Love Is Dead". The music video for "Love Is Dead" was released by Island Records on February 29, 2008 and the music video for "Walking On Air" premiered on MTV Overdrive on May 20, 2008. Starting in mid-July 2008, "Walking On Air" got minimal rotation on Top 40 stations. "Walking On Air" was also the free "Single of the Week" on iTunes for the week of July 21, 2008.

During the 2008 season finale of So You Think You Can Dance?, Fox used Kerli's video for "Walking On Air" for part of a commercial promoting their new show Fringe. Kerli also performed the song at the 2008 Scream Awards [3] Kerli's song "Creepshow" was used in the game Burnout Paradise for its in-game soundtrack[4] and by Fox for its promotion of Fringe's April 7, 2009 return.[5]

She was chosen to perform the theme for the 2008 videogame Quantum of Solace, "When Nobody Loves You". She also can be heard performing track number 6, entitled Bulletproof, on the official soundtrack of Punisher: War Zone. Among her exceptional singing talents, Kerli has also dabbled in acting—lending her voice to the upcoming film Hired Gun, playing the character of Morgan.

In June 2009, "Walking On Air" received much airplay in Italy, Austria, and Germany. It was in the KroneHit top 20 chart for the week ending June 26.

2009-Present: Almost Alice & Second album

On September 10, Island Def Jam announced Kerli's iPhone application[6] and the first song, Saima was released the following month.[7] Kerli re-released the single "The Creationist", which is a duet with the Italian songwriter Cesare Cremonini.[8] The song peaked at number 43 on the Italy Airplay Chart on January 17, 2010.[9]

Kerli received an European Border Breakers Award for the success of the album Love is Dead in Estonia.[10] On January 12, 2010, the track listing for Disney's Alice in Wonderland soundtrack Almost Alice was released and features two songs by Kerli, "Tea Party" and "Strange" which is a collaboration with Tokio Hotel.[11] On February 19, 2010, Kerli performed "Tea Party", "Walking On Air" and "Strange" at the Alice in Wonderland Ultimate Fan Event. Kerli is currently working on her second album which she is expected to finish and release in May 2010. In late 2010 Kerli is also expecting to go on a world tour to support her new album.

Personal life

Kerli stated she used to smoke marijuana almost daily and that it "opened some doors for [her but it wasn't] worth it".[12] Kerli currently lives in Los Angeles, California.[12]

  • People don't dream [in Estonia]. People don't have dreams. When your kid wants to be a superstar in America, the whole family supports the kid. If someone has talent it's appreciated and recognized. But in Estonia people will say: What, do you think you're better than us? We here, we are miserable, you're gonna be miserable too, because nobody can be different.

Love is Dead (2008)

  • I'm from a land called secret Estonia
    Nobody knows where it's at
  • Life is my creation
    Is my best friend
    Imagination
    Is my defense
    And I'll keep walking
    When skies are grey
Whatever happens was meant that way.
    • The Creationist
  • Let the butterflies cry
    Let them cry for you
And you just dry your eyes
    Because the world is wonderful.
    • Butterfly Cry
  • I used to believe there was no light
    But I found out
Oh, life is far too short to fight
Lose yourself, let go of your pain
Taste the air you breathe and kiss the sky.
    • Butterfly Cry
