Kern (formerly, Sumner) is a former unincorporated community in Kern County, California.[1] It is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Bakersfield,[2] at an elevation of 449 feet (137 m).[1]

After a dispute between Southern Pacific Railroad and the city of Bakersfield, the railroad bypassed the city and laid out the town in 1874.[2] The place was first called Sumner, in honor of Joseph W. Sumner, mine owner and judge.[2]

The Sumner post office opened in 1876, changed its name to Kern in 1893, and closed in 1924.[2]

Kern was incorporated into Bakersfield in 1909.[2]
