Character creation

Background

Kevin is a mechanic who first appeared in 1983, working for Brian Tilsley. His father, Bill Webster, and his sister, Debbie, later joined him. Initially his life consisted of working by day and drinking with friends Terry Duckworth and Curly Watts in the evening. He dated one or two girls but met the love of his life, Sally Seddon, in 1986 and they married. The Websters bought Number 13 from Hilda Ogden after she left to work as a doctor's housekeeper. The popular character is also infamously known for his '19-0' record. This is attributed to the 19 fist fights the character has been involved in over his many years on the soap. Every fight the hot-tempered mechanic has found himself in has resulted in the challenger being knocked out

Casting

Actor Michael Le Vell auditioned for the role and successfully landed the part after he had previously played another character called Neil Grimshaw, a newspaper delivery boy who worked at The Kabin.[2]

Character development

The characters of Kevin and Sally had a lack of storylines in their first years on the show but received a boost when Brian Park became executive producer. The Independent reports him as saying "Kevin and Sally Webster had years of washing their hands and eating baked beans on toast. Michael Le Vell and Sally Whittaker were then given great storylines, including his affair with Natalie, Sally's catfight with her when she found out and the subsequent divorce".[3]

Personality and identity

Kevin is very much a family man and looks out for them. ITV publicity say of the character: "A no-nonsense garage mechanic who likes an uncomplicated life and his tea on the table when he comes home from work.".[4] In the book 'Life in The Street' by Graeme Kay, Kevin is described as a very cheerful yet cautious character.

Relationships

Kevin spent his early years in the show with Sally Seddon, who he married and they had two daughters, Rosie and Sophie. Kevin later had an affair with his friend Tony's mother, Natalie Horrocks. Sally was away, nursing her sick mother at the time, and Natalie had no compunction about seducing a married man. Kevin and Sally divorced after the affair.

In the end, Sally and Kevin reconciled, mainly for the girls' sake but that didn't last. She was seduced by Greg Kelly, estranged son of Les Battersby, and this time, Kevin threw her out. Greg used her money (inherited from her mother) and abused her. The affair ended but Kevin refused to take her back. Despite his lingering feelings for Sally, he married Alison Wakefield, a machinist from the factory who was expecting his child. The night before Kevin and Alison's wedding, he and Sally slept together for old times' sake. Although Kevin married Alison, the secret came out the day Sally was to marry Danny Hargreaves. He called their wedding off, angry that she had cheated on him and then lied about it.

Through the years, Kevin has overlooked Sally's misdemeanours but Kevin asked Sally to marry him regardless and she agreed, for the sake of her girls. Sally had another affair with her boss, Ian Davenport, in 2005 which Kevin overlooked, pretending to believe Sally when she said nothing happened. Mid-2009 Kevin grew an attraction to Molly Dobbs (Tyrone Dobbs Wife) and have been having an affair since. Kevin and Sally have stayed together.

Storylines

1983-1999

Kevin Webster arrived in Weatherfield in 1983, moving in with Hilda Ogden as her lodger, and was soon followed by his father Bill and sister Debbie.

After accidentally splashing her whilst driving by in his lorry, Kevin began a relationship with Sally Seddon. Their romance was often put under strain due to Hilda's interference, as she thought Kevin was too good for Sally, and Sally's loyalty to her family, who treated her badly. Kevin proposed numerous times but it wasn't until Sally almost lost Kevin when he broke the window of the Rovers Return Inn to drag Bet Lynch to safety after a fire destroyed the pub in 1986 that Sally finally accepted and later on that year they married.

The following year Hilda left Weatherfield, selling the house to Kevin and Sally, and Kevin began working at the garage which, after much persuasion from Sally, he eventually bought and went into partnership with Tony Horrocks. Together they had two daughters: Rosie (born in the back of Don Brennan's taxi in December 1990) and Sophie (originally named Lauren; born in November 1994).

However their happiness wasn't to last as in 1997, whilst Sally and the girls visited Sally's mother who had become ill, Kevin began an affair with Natalie Horrocks, the mother of his business partner Tony. Originally their affair was no-strings attached but Natalie fell for Kevin and decided that she wanted him all to herself and as a result she purposely became careless in covering up their affair. Sally eventually discovered Kevin's infidelity but forgave him; however the following year they separated permanently after Sally had an affair with her boss Greg Kelly, the son of Les Battersby. They divorced in 1999 and began a custody battle after it transpired that Greg had been physically abusing Sally in front of the girls. Sally was awarded full custody, much to her delight, but when Greg began to threaten the girls she sent them to live with family friend Rita Sullivan, who in turn sent them to live with Kevin until Sally was free of Greg's clutches.

2000—

Later that year Kevin began a relationship with shy factory worker Alison Wakefield, but she walked out on him when it became apparent that he was still in love with his ex-wife. However upon discovering that she was pregnant with his child Kevin won Alison back and they married in a register office wedding in January 2000 with just Kevin's daughters, Roy and Hayley Cropper, Linda Sykes and Ashley Peacock present. Their happiness was not to last however when their son Jake died just a day after his birth in June 2000. Their tragedy was too much for Alison to bear and after kidnapping Sarah-Lou Platt's newborn baby Bethany she committed suicide by stepping in front of a lorry, leaving Kevin devastated.

In the following months Kevin had a brief romance with Molly Hardcastle, a nurse introduced to him by his friend Martin Platt and who he had helped reconsider committing suicide when it transpired that she was seriously in debt, but by 2001 he broke up with her as he realised that he had never stopped loving his ex-wife Sally. He then disrupted Sally's wedding to Danny Hargreaves by informing him that on the eve of his wedding to Alison he had had a one-night stand with Sally. Danny was disgusted with his fiancé and jilted her at the altar, leaving Sally humiliated and devastated.

As 2002 approached Kevin was determined to win Sally back and eventually convinced her to remarry him, although she warned him that it was only for their daughters' sakes and their relationship would not be sexual. However during their engagement Sally had a brief fling with Alex, a painter and decorator, which was revealed on their wedding day. Sally was then faced with the choice of spending the rest of her life with either Kevin and Alex but she chose Kevin, who had already forgiven her for her fling with Alex, and they remarried that day in December 2002.

For the next few years Kevin worked away at his garage and became a brotherly figure to his employee Tyrone Dobbs. He also became good friends with his employee Tommy Harris, with whom he helped save Gail Platt and her children Sarah-Lou and David when her psychotic husband Richard Hillman attempted to kill them all in the Weatherfield canal in March 2003. Kevin was distraught when he discovered Tommy's body in the garage in January 2005 after he had been murdered by his daughter Katy.

That same year saw Sally become a pushy parent, much to Kevin and Rosie's distress. She enrolled Rosie into the prestigious Oakhill School after Rosie showed good potential in Maths and forced Kevin to work extra hours at the garage so that they could afford to keep Rosie there. Sally also took on a job as secretary to car dealer Ian Davenport, whose daughter Gemma had become friends with Rosie as they both attended Oakhill. Sally and Ian began an affair later on in 2005, which was discovered by Rosie when she walked in on them, and when Kevin discovered the truth he was devastated and decided to end his marriage. However Rosie persuaded him to rethink his decision, convincing him that Sally did love him and was only having the affair so that she could pay Rosie's tuition fees.

In 2007 Kevin began to think that Sally was playing away again, this time with teacher John Stape. This transpired as John was tutoring Sally, who wanted to sit A-level English. John's girlfriend Fiz Brown also thought that John and Sally were having an affair but when she confronted Sally on Christmas Day 2007 both the Websters' and Fiz were stunned when it was revealed that John was in fact having an affair with Kevin and Sally's daughter Rosie! Kevin severely beat John up and was subsequently arrested for assault, being sentenced to 28 days inprisonment. However he only served 14 days for good behaviour.

Kevin began feuding with businessman Tony Gordon, who was manipulating Rosie to try to get Kevin to sell the garage to him. Kevin then sent Tony away and told him that the garage was not for sale. Tony later invested in Kevin again, this time with Jimmy Dockerson, Kevin responded angrily but forgot about Jimmy until he realised he was losing clients. He confronted the specific garage mechanic alone with Jimmy before confronting Tony concerning the situation, although Sally and Rosie denied Kevin's proof. Kevin later discovered that his tow truck had been stolen whilst helping a pretty woman fix her car on a call out. Although he had no proof, he knew that Tony was responsible for the stunt. Later that year he discovered that Rosie had been supplying Tony with business documents from the garage. He was both furious and disappointed that she had betrayed him in such a manner even though she was under the impression that she was actually helping him with his ailing business. He gave half the business to Tyrone as an incentive to help him rebuild the business, therefore Kevin is now a co-owner, this is to stop Tony from gaining control of it.

Rosie later disappeared leaving Sally and Kevin distraught. They initially thought that she had run off with Lottery winnings from the Underworld syndicate until Janice Battersby confessed that she had claimed the cash using Rosie's identity. Sally and Kevin received a postcard from Rosie which led them to believe that she was in Holyhead and Sally subsequently went there searching for her to no avail. Kevin and Sally were reunited with Rosie on 5 November 2008, after it was revealed that John Stape had abducted her. Kevin threatened John but was restrained by a detective.

During mid 2009, Kevin became attracted to Molly Dobbs, wife of his partner and best friend Tyrone. Molly began to take an interest in the business and started sharing the book-keeping with Sally, meaning that she would be spending more time with Kevin. Eventually he broke down and confessed to Molly in June 2009, saying that he was infatuated with her - "I want to jump on your bones!" he exclaimed. This caused mixed reactions within Molly who slapped him across the face initially but later told him that she was flattered by his statement. They began to plot an affair together and after a series of mishaps their chance finally came when Kevin's sneaked away from Sally's birthday party in July 2009 and had sex with a waiting Molly on her couch. Afterwards Kevin felt guilty and decided to end their fling before it got out of hand by persuading Tyrone to take Molly away on holiday. They resumed their affair, however, in August 2009.

They soon confessed their love for each other, and pledged to leave their respective spouses and start a new life together. However, Kevin kept finding some excuse not to tell Sally, including Sophie's baptisms and her GCSE's next year.

On Christmas day, Kevin convinced Molly that they should come clean about their affair that same day. However, when he sat Sally down, she had a confession of her own to make - she had breast cancer. He hurried over and pretended he needed stuffing for the turkey after seeing Molly sitting Tyrone down. Molly then opened Dev's shop and Kevin told her about Sally's breast cancer. Molly tearfully said how unfair it was, not for Sally, but for them. Angry, Kevin told her that their affair was over and it was the least of his worries, and how he would support Sally through her illness.

Kevin told his father Bill on 28 December 2009 that he has been sleeping with Molly which Bill was angry about.
