Kodungaiyur (Tamil: கொடுங்கையூர்) is mainly a residential locality in northern part of the metropolitan city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu state, India. Chennai Corporation limit starts from here. Ward No:1 & 2 out of 155 are located in Kodungaiyur).
Kodungaiyur is located in northern most part of Chennai city. It borders Selavayal, Chinna sekkaadu to the north, Kaviyarasu Kannadasan (KKD) Nagar to the east, Arul Nagar (Madhavaram) to the west and Moolakkadai to the south. Kodungaiyur forms a boundary between Chennai and Thiruvallur districts as Kodungaiyur lies in Chennai Dt. and Madhavaram is in Thiruvallur Dt. National Highway 5(NH 5) touches this area in south at Moolakkadai. The Housing Board residences are at KKD Nagar ( Phase -I) and Muthamil Nagar (Phase -II) which are major developments is last 2 decades. The main throughfares in the area are Kamaraj Road, Thiruvalluvar street, NSK salai and Manali road. The southern part (older part) of the locality around Kamaraj salai is called "Periya Kodungaiyur", whereas the northern part (relatively recently developed part) around NSK salai and Manali road is called "Chinna Kodungaiyur" and Thiruvalluvar street making the unofficial divider between these two areas.

Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) runs passenger buses to Kodungaiyur from other major parts of the Chennai city. There are 3 Bus terminus in Kodungaiyur.They are Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar (KKD Nagar) , Parvathy nagar & Muthamizh nagar. KKD Nagar Terminus is the major and popular bus terminus here.From here,bus goes to various parts of chennai, 7G,M7G,M33,M116,M116A to Parrys,2A to Anna square And M121G, 170T, 170E, to CMBT, Tambaram. There is also a bus terminus located at Parvathy Nagar in northern section of the locality. The bus routes are 46C from CMBT(Koyambedu), 38D from Thiruvottiyur, M116L from High Court. The other smaller terminus is located at Muthamizh Nagar with 46G from CMBT (Koyambedu) and 138 from Ennore. In Chinna Kodungaiyur (Northern part), residents east of Manali road goto Kaviyarasu Kanadasan (KKD) Nagar bus terminus and residents west of Manali road goto Arul Nagar (Madhavaram) bus stop. Residents of Periya Kodungaiyur goto Moolakadai bus stop to catch buses to their destinations.
Autos are most important modes of transport here.From moolakadai,most of the people depend on Auto to reach chinna kodungaiyur. Earlier Horse Carts were running in this route,but it has been stopped now .
As there is no railway line passing through kodungaiyur, residents normally go to Perambur or Vysarpadi Jeeva ( nearest railway station) to travel in trains.

The only theatre in Kodungaiyur is 'Pandiyan Theatre' formerly known as 'Odean Mani Theatre'. Predominantly Tamil movies are screened in this theatre, and at times English movies also finds a place.

Kodungaiyur Sewage Treatment Plan (STP) is situated on T.H Road opposite to Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar (KKD Nagar) Bus Terminal.
Chennai corporation zone–I of sewerage system forms the oldest part of the City and is in the North eastern portion of the City bounded by Bay of Bengal to the East, the City limits to the North, the Buckingham Canal to the West and Pycrafts Road to the South. Zone–II is the largest of the five macro systems and serves the Central and Northern portions of the City. It is bounded by the Buckingham Canal in the East and the Corporation limits in the North. Revenue of about Rs.10 crores is being generated per year through the sale of secondary treated sewage to the industries.
About 3.0 lakhs litres per day of secondary treated sewage is supplied to the Chennai Municipal Corporation for watering of plants and lawns at public parks and traffic islands, at free of cost.
Kodungaiyur is one of the two dump yards where the Corporation dumps nearly 3,200 tonnes of garbage every day.
The 400-acre spread in Kodungaiyur is its biggest facility.

Its other facility running upto 200-acres is in Perungudi in south Chennai. Nearly 35 per cent of the garbage dumped in the yards is biodegradable and the civic agency plans to set up mechanical compost plants to address them.
