Kossuth visited the U.S. in 1851 where he was greeted enthusiastically and acclaimed as a great orator. Ralph Waldo Emerson greeted him on his arrival at Concord Mills, and he spoke before the Ohio State Legislature on February 16, 1852. Kossuth was the second foreign leader, after Lafayette, to address a joint session of Congress. His personal appearance spawned a fashion craze consisting of a moustache-less beard with a tophat.
