History

Transgender actress Candis Cayne called the LGBT community "the last great minority", noting that "We can still be harassed openly" and be "called out on television."[11] Before the sexual revolution of the 1960s, there was no common non‐derogatory vocabulary for non‐heterosexuality; the closest such term, “third gender”, traces back to the 1860s but never gained wide acceptance.[12][13][14][15][16][17]
.The first widely used term, homosexual, was thought to carry negative connotations and tended to be replaced by homophile in the 1950s and 1960s,[18] and subsequently gay in the 1970s.^ "The term 'homophobia' is often used inaccurately to describe any person who objects to homosexual behavior on either moral, psychological or medical grounds.

Simple English

LGBT is an acronym. It means Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender.

Some people make this acronym longer. They put other letters at the end:

So it can be written LGBTIQTS. Some people add Ally (someone not LGBT but who supports LGBT people.) Not everyone agrees what should be in the acronym.

This is a community. A community is a group of people who have something in common. It can also be referred to as the queer community.

People who are LGBT are either:

  • sexually attracted to a gender that is different from most people (or not sexually attracted to a gender that most people are attracted to), also called the matter of sexual orientation,

or

  • are a gender that is different from most people, or behave in a way that most people their gender would not behave, also called the matter of gender identity.

This word and idea of "LGBT" also used ducuments of international law on human rights such as, the Declaration of Montreal, the Yogyakarta Principles.
