LaGrange is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 747 at the 2000 census.



Lagrange and surrounding towns were the site of a great forest fire in 1900.[1]

Notable people

Abiather J. Knowles (1830-1905) of Lagrange was awarded the Medal of Honor as a private in the American Civil War. At the Battle of Bull Run, according to his citation, he removed dead and wounded comrades from the field while under heavy fire. He is buried in Lagrange. Myra Marsh (1894-1964), a character actress (I Love lucy, Dragnet) was born in Lagrange.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.5 square miles (128.2 km²), of which, 49.4 square miles (128.0 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.10%) is water.


As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 747 people, 286 households, and 197 families residing in the town. The population density was 15.1 people per square mile (5.8/km²). There were 349 housing units at an average density of 7.1/sq mi (2.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.19% White, 0.13% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.67% Asian, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.27% of the population.

There were 286 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 33.9% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,295, and the median income for a family was $42,159. Males had a median income of $31,193 versus $20,489 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,743. About 11.9% of families and 17.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.3% of those under age 18 and 34.7% of those age 65 or over.
