Laila, Layla, Leila, Lejla or Leyla (Arabic: ليلى‎; Hebrew: לילה‎) is an internationally-used feminine given name originating in the Semitic languages. The name is derived from the tri-consonantal root: L-Y-L (a root shared with the Hebrew name: Lilith) and means "Night" and over time has come to mean "Born at Night," "Dark-haired Beauty" or "Dark Beauty."[1]

While initially a popular name in the Muslim World (originially in the Arab World, Persia and the Turkic World, later also among the Muslims of the Balkans - such as Bosniaks and Albanians - and in India) it has acquired a following in the English-speaking world, the Nordic countries and among Jews.
