Latasha Thomas is alderman of the 17th ward of the City of Chicago. She was appointed to that position by Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2000.

Early life

Thomas earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her law degree from DePaul University. She has been a lawyer in private practice since 1994.

Public Service

Thomas was Director of Intergovernmental Relations for the Chicago Department of Human Services and the Chief of Staff for former Alderman Terry Peterson, who Thomas replaced.

Aldermanic career

Thomas was appointed alderman in 2000 by Mayor Daley, but later elected in 2001 and reelected in 2003 and 2007. As alderman, Thomas is committed to redevelopment and job creation in the 17th ward. She has also worked to get many of the 17th ward schools renovated. Thomas serves on five committees: Buildings; Committee, Rules and Ethics; Parks and Recreation; Special Events and Cultural Affairs; and Zoning and she is the Chairman of the Education committee.

Personal life

Thomas is married to Timothy Thomas Jr., First Deputy Commissioner in the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Mayors’ Office of Special Events. They have two children: Victoria and Timothy.
