Lauren Luke was born in South Shields, England. Her formal education ended when she dropped out of school to support her son, Jordan, who was born when Lauren was 16.[3] In 2007, Luke began selling makeup on eBay, after her job as a taxi dispatcher was taking her nowhere. She took photos of herself wearing the makeup to demonstrate how it could be used. Her buyers started asking more about how to achieve the looks she was creating than the makeup she was selling, which prompted Luke to create a YouTube makeup tutorial channel.
Luke’s video tutorials show viewers how to apply makeup to recreate various looks, including celebrity-inspired looks.[4] Her YouTube channel, Panacea81, has 60 million views and over 300,000 subscribers since her first upload on July 22, 2007.[1][2] Luke chose the alias Panacea81 by pairing the Greek Goddess’s name Panacea with her birthday year, 1981. Luke is a YouTube site partner and is the most subscribed YouTube user in the UK. [5]
In November 2008, Luke was featured in a BBC documentary called Inside Out.[6] The Guardian then recruited Luke to write a weekly beauty column in January 2009, which she still updates weekly.[7] In March 2009, a second, more in-depth documentary about Lauren and her life aired as part of a documentary series titled Natalie Cassidy's Real Britain, on BBC Three. [8][9]
On 1 October, 2009, Luke introduced the launch of her book on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour[10] and Channel 4's The Paul O'Grady Show.[11]
Luke's aims (as stated on her YouTube page): "I am very proud of myself considering my average size for a woman it is very hard to get this much notice. I want to make a huge change to the beauty industry and with all of your help through YouTube I hopefully will be able to do so."[12]
Luke lives at home in Jarrow, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, with her partner and son Jordan, age 13 Luke has spoken out about having been bullied when she was younger over her looks and weight.[13]
On April 27, 2009, Luke launched a proprietary signature cosmetics line called By Lauren Luke on her website ByLaurenLuke.com.[14] Sephora launched the line in 135 stores across the USA and Canada on September 21, 2009.[15] October 1, 2009, Hodder & Stoughton released Luke’s book, “Looks By Lauren Luke,” in the UK.[16] In November 2009, Luke is to be featured as an avatar in the Nintendo DS game Supermodel Makeover By Lauren Luke.[17]
