COPD Learn More Breathe Better

In January 2007, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health, in partnership with several professional societies, health, and advocacy organizations launched COPD Learn More Breathe Better, to improve awareness among those at greatest risk for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

COPD is a growing epidemic, the fourth leading cause of U.S. deaths, affecting 1 in 4 Americans over the age of 45. More than 12 million people are currently diagnosed with COPD, and it is estimated that another 12 million may have it, but remain undiagnosed, despite recognizable symptoms and treatments that can control symptoms and prolong life. [1]

Purpose of Learn More Breathe Better

According to their website, Learn More Breathe Better seeks to:

  • Increase awareness of COPD as a serious lung disease—the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S.
  • Increase understanding that COPD is treatable.
  • Encourage people at risk to get a simple breathing test and talk to their doctors about treatment options.

Learn More Breathe Better is directed toward men and women over age 45, especially those who smoke or have smoked, and those with risk associated with genetics or environmental exposures. In addition, the campaign aims to reach people who have been diagnosed with COPD as well as health care providers, particularly those in the primary care setting. [2]
