Biography

Early life

Meyer-Landrut was born on 23 May 1991 in Hanover.[1] and is the grand daughter of Andreas Meyer-Landrut, the West German ambassador to the Soviet Union in Moscow from 1980 to 1983 and from 1987 to 1989.[2][3][4] She grew up as an only child[1], and started taking dancing lessons at the age of five, practicing various modern styles.[5] Later she grew fond of singing and acted as an extra in a number of television series[1] however never received formal training.[6] She attends the Roderbruch integrated comprehensive high school[7] and intends on graduating in April 2010.[5]

Eurovision Song Contest

Meyer-Landrut took part in the talent show contest Unser Star für Oslo (Our Star for Oslo), which was organised jointly by the public broadcasters ARD and NDR and the private television channel ProSieben, together with the entertainer and music producer Stefan Raab, to select the German entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010. After her first round performance, the German press lauded her appearance as similar to actress Nora Tschirner and her singing to Icelandic performer Björk. Meyer-Landrut went through seven competitive heats of cover performances to the national final on 12 March 2010. She and her opponent Jennifer Braun presented three entry candidate songs specially written for the competition. The viewers voted Meyer-Landrut's performance of the song "Satellite"[8][9] written by the American-Danish songwriter duo Julie Frost and John Gordon, as the winner. The three songs performed by her in the final (including "Bee" and "Love Me", the latter co-written by her and Raab), occupied the first three places on the German iTunes Store sales chart making her the first performer ever to achieve that.[10][3] The songs made the same positions on the MusicLoad chart.[11] The music video to "Satellite" was shot during the night after the final and was premiered on German television channels on 16 March 2010.[12]
