This is a partial list of Afghan security forces members
killed in the War in Afghanistan
(2001–present).
Besides serving as an indicator of some of the numbers of
policemen, soldiers and private military contractors (PMC's) deaths
during specific time periods, this article allows readers to
investigate the circumstances of those deaths by reading the
citation articles.
Totals
Through January 8, 2009, approximately 4,005
policemen, 1,423 soldiers and 365
private security guards are estimated to have been killed in the
war based on all of the reports and estimates listed below.
Also, 33 policemen, 26
soldiers and 7 private security guards were
reported to have been captured and 16 policemen,
10 soldiers and 6 guards are
missing.
By October 14, 2009, overall it was confirmed that more than
5,500 soldiers and policemen were killed since the
start of the war.[1]
Afghan
security forces losses confirmed by time periods
April 1, 2003-April 30, 2003 - During this
period, more than 30 soldiers were killed.[2]
July 1, 2003-August 31, 2003 - During this
period, two police chiefs and more than 30 other policemen were
killed.[3]
December 7, 2004-May 16, 2005 - During this
period, 600 policemen were killed.[4]
March 21, 2005-August 22, 2005 - During this
period, more than 40 soldiers were killed.[5]
June 1, 2005-July 31, 2005 - During this
period, more than 50 policemen were killed.[6]
March 21, 2006-December 31, 2006 - During this
period, 556 policemen are estimated to have been killed since it
was reported that 630 died between March 21, 2006 and March 21,
2007, of which 74 died during the 2007 period.[7][8]
January 1, 2007-December 31, 2007 - During the
Taliban insurgency in 2007, 1,019 policemen were killed.[9]
January 1, 2008-December 31, 2008 - During the
Taliban insurgency in 2008, more than 1,100 policemen and 530
soldiers were killed.[10]
January 1, 2009-March 21, 2009 - During this
period, 107 soldiers are estimated to have been killed since it was
reported that 368 died between March 21, 2008 and March 21, 2009,
of which 261 died during the 2008 period.[11][12]
January 1, 2009-February 28, 2009 - During this
period, 56 policemen were killed per month for a total of 102
killed since the beginning of the year up to the end of
February.[13]
June 21, 2009-June 28, 2009 - During this
one-week period, 18 policemen were killed.[14]
July 5, 2009-July 12, 2009 - During this
one-week period, nearly 50 policemen were killed.[15]
Total based on the above estimates: 3,527
policemen and 707 soldiers killed.
Total confirmed by the Afghan government on October 14,
2009: 5,500 policemen and soldiers killed since the start
of the Taliban insurgency.[1]

In 2010, 8 policemen and 10 soldiers were reported killed.

- January 4 - Various Taliban attacks in the country killed three

and a British journalist in an explosion in southern

2009
In 2009, in addition to the overall above mentioned totals, 330
policemen and 170 soldiers were reported killed, 29 policemen and
10 soldiers were captured and eight policemen and four soldiers
were missing in action.

attacked in Badghis province, three policemen were also killed.[23]

attacked in Kandahar province, three policemen were also

- January 18 - A suicide bomber killed one soldier in Paktika
province.[148]
- January 27 - Taliban militants killed an Afghan intelligence
official. They shot dead director of intelligence of the Yaqoobi
district in a market in Khost province.[149]

- April 1 - A suicide bomber killed two soldiers in Laghman
province.[150]
- April 25 - A roadside bomb attack on an Afghan military convoy
in the Wazekha area, in Paktika province left seven soldiers
dead.[151]

- July 9 - An Afghan soldier who had links with the Taliban shot
and killed four soldiers at an army base in Herat, he also wounded
another 10 Afghan and two U.S. soldiers.[152]
- July 17 - A roadside bomb attack on an Afghan military patrol
