Jonathan Luigs, the only selection among players from the University of Arkansas in the 2009 NFL Draft

The University of Arkansas Razorbacks have drafted 246 players into the National Football League (NFL) since the league began holding drafts in 1936.[a] The Razorbacks' highest draft position was second overall in 1954, when Lamar McHan was selected by the Chicago Cardinals.[1][2] Arkansas' first drafted player in the NFL was Jack Robbins, who was the fifth overall pick by the Chicago Cardinals in 1938.[3] The only player selected from the latest NFL draft was Jonathan Luigs, the 2007 Rimington Trophy winner, by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round.[4]

Each NFL franchise seeks to add new players through the annual NFL Draft. Generally, the team with the worst record the previous year picks first, the next-worst team second, and so on. Teams that did not make the playoffs are ordered by their regular-season record with any remaining ties broken by strength of schedule. Playoff participants are sequenced after non-playoff teams, based on their round of elimination (wild card, division, conference, and Super Bowl). See NFL Draft Rules for further detail. Teams may also negotiate with one another both before and during the draft for the right to pick an additional player in a given round. For example, a team may include draft picks in future drafts in order to acquire a player during a trading period. Also, teams may make negotiations during the draft relinquishing the right to pick in a given round for the right to have an additional pick in a later round.[5][6][7]

Before the AFL–NFL merger agreements in 1966, the American Football League (AFL) operated in direct competition with the NFL and held a separate draft. This led to a massive bidding war over top prospects between the two leagues. As part of the merger agreement on June 8, 1966, the two leagues would hold a multiple round "Common Draft". Once the AFL officially merged with the NFL in 1970, the "Common Draft" simply became the NFL Draft.[8][9][7]

Sixteen former Razorbacks have been elected to a Pro Bowl, and 19 former Razorbacks have won a championship with their respective teams.[b]
