Happy Tree Friends is an American Internet Flash cartoon and television series written and created by Aubrey Ankrum, Rhode Montijo and Kenn Navarro. The Internet series first debuted in 2000 with the short "Spin Fun Knowin' Ya". The first season of the Internet series has been released on Region One DVD, but various DVDs have been released featuring episodes from the first two seasons.

The Happy Tree Friends universe features twenty main characters, and various background characters referred to as "Generic Tree Friends". The basic structure of an episode features one or more character being killed, only to regenerate in the future episodes. Each episode usually ends with a "moral", shown after the credits sequence.

Happy Tree Friends is currently on its third season.

In addition to the show's three seasons and an unofficial pilot, there have been some special shorts since its premiere in 2000. These include ten shorts not listed in any season, eleven special shorts dubbed as "Smoochies", six special Christmas-themed episodes dubbed as "Kringles", three Valentine's Day-themed episodes dubbed as "Love Bites" and five "Break" shorts. The "Smoochie" shorts involve three different items being dropped next to a main character, only for them to be killed in three different ways, each regarding the item. These have been adapted into the Happy Tree Friends website where one can choose an item to drop.[1] The "Kringle" shorts are Christmas-themed shorts that feature the main characters doing various Christmas-related tasks, only to be killed in various ways.[2] The "Love Bites" were Valentine's Day-themed shorts, that went with the basic structure of a Happy Tree Friends episode. The "Break" shorts were produced in 2006, when no new shorts were produced until the following year. A new break short debuted in 2009.

The unofficial pilot episode, created in 1999.

A dinosaur plays a guitar, while a chipmunk, a rabbit and a beaver (possibly early versions of the characters Giggles, Cuddles and Toothy) sit down and watch. One of the dinosaur's banjo strings break, causing the onlookers to laugh. Angered, the dinosaur decapitates the chipmunk, the rabbit and the beaver. However, the beaver's decapitated head survives long enough to bite the dinosaur, causing him to scream in pain.

A 1920s-cartoon parody featuring the character Cro-Marmot in prehistoric times. It features him eating a dead dinosaur. However, he mistakenly bites on the tail of a living dinosaur. The angry dinosaur then proceeds to kill Cro-Marmot by chewing him to shreds. Cro-Marmot escapes but then gets eaten by a pterodactyl.

A short featuring the character The Mole as a detective attempting to catch a criminal called The Rat, who attempts to steal a special camera. They go through a wild chase which ends with The Rat, badly injured, in a warehouse. The Rat makes one last attempt to steal the camera, but tiny explosive mines planted in the building explode, killing him. The Mole walks away slowly, and the camera zooms in to reveal the fact that there is a tiny mine on his face, about to explode.

Several characters are seen inside a crane machine prize game. Cuddles is picked up, but falls down. He is later brought back up, but the crane violently trashes his body inside the machine, until he eventually dies. The remaining characters panic and frantically try to escape out of the crane machine.

A reporter interviews Cro-Marmot. She asks questions to him, all to no response due to Cro-Marmot being frozen. They then run out of time, and as the credits roll, the reporter fumes over getting no response.

After being injured by candy canes from a truckload of candy due to his candy addiction, Nutty is sent to the hospital. He is then sent to an asylum, where he eventually recovers from his addiction. Lifty and Shifty, who Nutty had bought the truckload of candy from, attempt to sell him more candy, but Nutty rejects. They then offer to sell him a video game, which he buys. He eventually becomes addicted to video games, but his game console powers down. Nutty then sees Lifty and Shifty with a van full of video games, and chases them with Cuddles's car, killing Petunia in the process. He then crashes into Lifty and Shifty's van, killing them in the process, as well as The Mole. Nutty then discovers all the video games destroyed, but sees a candy cane. He licks it, starts laughing and reverts back to his candy addiction.
