Craig Biggio (1987) is the only first-round draft pick of the
Astros with over 3000 career hits.
The Houston
Astros, originally called the "Colt .45s," are a Major
League Baseball (MLB) franchise based
in Houston, Texas. They play in the National League Central
division. Since the institution of Major League Baseball's Rule 4 Draft, the Astros
have selected 51 players in the first round. Officially known as
the "First-Year Player Draft",[1]
the Rule 4 Draft is Major League Baseball's primary mechanism for
assigning amateur baseball players from high schools, colleges, and
other amateur baseball clubs to its teams. The draft order is
determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team
possessing the worst record receiving the first pick.[1]
In addition, teams which lost free agents in the previous off-season may
be awarded compensatory or supplementary
picks.[2]
Of the 51 players picked in the first round by Houston, 23 have
been pitchers, the most of
any position; 20 of these were right-handed, while 3 were
left-handed. Eight players each at catcher and shortstop were selected, while seven outfielders, two first basemen, and two third basemen were
selected. The team also selected one player at second
base.[3]
Thirteen of the players came from high schools or universities in
the state of California, while Texas and Tennessee follow, with five and three
players, respectively. They have also drafted one player from
outside the United States: Ramón Castro (1994) from Puerto Rico.[3]
No Astros first-round pick has won a World Series championship, Rookie of
the Year award, MVP
award, or Cy
Young Award. Craig
Biggio (1987) is the only player drafted by the Astros in the
first round in the 3000 hit club.[4]
Brad Lidge (1998) won
the Comeback
Player of the Year Award in 2008, his first season with the Philadelphia Phillies after
leaving the Astros the previous season.[5]
The Astros have made 11 selections in the supplemental round of
the draft. They have made the first
overall selection in the draft twice, in 1976 and 1992.[3][6] They
have had 14 compensatory picks since the institution of the
First-Year Player Draft in 1965. These additional picks are
provided when a team loses a particularly valuable free agent in
the prior off-season,[2][7][V] or, more recently, if a
team fails to sign a draft pick from the previous year.[8]
The Astros have failed to sign one of their first-round picks, John Burke (1991), and were
given the 37th pick of the 1992 draft in compensation which they
used to draft Kendall Rhine.[3]

Although the Astros have drafted 23 pitchers in the first round,
Billy Wagner (1993) is one of only 3 left-handed pitchers
taken.
Ramón Castro (1994), drafted out of Puerto Rico, is the only player
drafted by the Astros in the first round from outside the United
States.
Lance Berkman (1997) is one of two players drafted from an
institution based in the Astros' home city of Houston.
Brad Lidge (1998) went on to win the Comeback Player of the Year
award in 2008 with the Phillies, a season after leaving the
Astros.
Chris Burke (2001) is the only second baseman taken by the Astros
in the first round of the draft.

- V Free agents are evaluated
by the Elias Sports Bureau and rated "Type
A", "Type B", or not compensation-eligible. If a team offers arbitration to a
player but that player refuses and subsequently signs with another
team, the original team may receive additional draft picks. If a
"Type A" free agent leaves in this way his previous team receives a
supplemental pick and a compensation pick from the team with which
he signs. If a "Type B" free agent leaves in this way his previous
team receives only a supplemental pick.[8]
