Malcolm Kelly was drafted 51st overall by the Washington Redskins in the 2008 NFL Draft.

The University of Oklahoma Sooners football team has had 343 players drafted into the National Football League (NFL) since the league began holding drafts in 1936.[1][A 1] This includes 37 players taken in the first round and two overall number one picks, Lee Roy Selmon in 1976 and Billy Sims in 1980 (Brian Bosworth was the number one pick in the 1987 Supplemental Draft).[4] Oklahoma had five players selected from the latest NFL draft.[5]

Each NFL franchise seeks to add new players through the annual NFL Draft. The team with the worst record the previous year picks first, the next-worst team second, and so on.[6] The exception to this record-based order is that the winner of the previous Super Bowl picks last and the loser picks second-to-last. Teams may negotiate with one another both before and during the draft for the right to pick an additional player in a given round. For example, a team may include draft picks in future drafts in order to acquire a player during a trading period. Also, teams may make negotiations during the draft relinquishing the right to pick in a given round for the right to have an additional pick in a later round.[3][7][8]

Before the merger agreements in 1966, the American Football League (AFL) operated in direct competition with the NFL and held a separate draft. This led to a massive bidding war over top prospects between the two leagues. As part of the merger agreement on June 8, 1966, the two leagues would hold a multiple round "Common Draft". Once the AFL officially merged with the NFL in 1970, the "Common Draft" simply became the NFL Draft.[2][3][9]

Twenty-five former Sooners have been selected to a Pro Bowl, and thirty-one former Sooners have won a championship with their respective teams.
