Notes

  1. ^ Kenyon was nominated by President Harding for the federal bench and immediately confirmed by his Senate colleagues on January 31, 1922, but he delayed his resignation from the Senate for over two weeks, mailing it on February 15 and stating that it was effective February 24. "Kenyon resignation on the way," Iowa City Press-Citizen, 1922-02-16, at p.1.
  2. ^ On January 5, 1957, the Senate determined that Harlan's election was not valid, as the Iowa Senate had not participated in it. Harlan was subsequently regularly elected and retook his seat on January 29, 1857.
  3. ^ Brookhart ran as an independent after losing in the Republican primary in 1932; he also lost the general election.
