Shakira is a Colombian singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer and philanthropist. She began her career in 1990 with Sony Music and has been one of the most popular Latin acts in the world since the mid-1990s. Shakira has sold 50 million albums.[1][2] and has won 2 Grammy Awards and 7 Latin Grammy Awards.[3] Shakira's debut album, Magia, was recorded with Sony Music in 1990 but the album did not fare well commercially.[4] The second studio album Peligro of the same genre was released in 1993. The album was better received than Magia, though it was also considered a commercial failure.
In 1995, Shakira returned to the studio to make her third album (First studio album), Pies Descalzos, which brought her great popularity in Latin America. It spawned three singles "Estoy Aquí", "Pies Descalzos, Sueños Blancos" and "Dónde Estás Corazón" that reached top five at Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. The album sold more than five million copies and was certified Platinum by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). [5] Shakira second studio album, ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? was released on September 28, 1998.[6] It has spawned five singles "Ciega, Sordomuda", "Tú", "Inevitable", Ojos Así" and "No Creo" that reached Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. The album sold more than ten million copies and was certified Platinum by RIAA.[5] In 2000, Shakira released her first live album MTV Unplugged and was certified four time Multi Platinum by RIAA.[5]
In 2001, Shakira released her first English language album (third overall), Laundry Service, which sold more than twenty million copies worldwide[2] and was certified three time multi platinum by RIAA.[5] It spawned six singles, four English:"Whenever, Wherever", "Underneath Your Clothes", "Objection (Tango)" and "The One" and two Spanish:"Te Dejo Madrid" and Que Me Quedes Tú".
In 2005, Shakira start her two albums "Oral Fixation" project. Fijación Oral Vol. 1, the first album of the project (fourth overall) was released on june 3,2005 and spawned five spanish singles: "La Tortura" (featuring Alejandro Sanz), "No" (featuring Gustavo Cerati), "Día De Enero", "La Pared" and "Las de la Intuición". The album was certified eleven time multi Platinum(latin), two time Platinum and album first singles "La Tortura" was also certified Platinum by RIAA.[5]. Oral Fixation Vol. 2, the second album of the project (fifth overall) was released on November 28, 2005 and has three english singles:"Don't Bother", "Hips Don't Lie" (featuring Wyclef Jean) and "Illegal". In 2002, Shakira won nineteen awards from thirty one nominations, including Best Music Video for "Suerte" at the Latin Grammy Awards. In 2003, Shakira won four awards from eleven nominations, including Echo Award for Best International Female Artist and World Music Awards for Best Selling Latin Female Artist.
