Data as of 2007 shows the United Kingdom solidly ranked as the third largest music market in the world.[1]

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certifies an album as platinum for 300,000 shipment sales[2] and the UK Chart compiles its chart with the retail sales. For this reason in this page, there are two lists: one for the highest certified albums (compiled by BPI) and one for the highest retail sales (compiled by UK Chart). The lists present only the albums that sold at least 3 million copies.

Though digital sales play a considerable role in overall sales nowadays, those figures are not represented here.
